With the 2020 Maryland High School baseball season just underway and games right around the corner, we begin to close out our complete preseason coverage with a look at every conference throughout that state. We will break down each conference with a preview of teams expected to contend as well as key players from across the league that you won't want to miss play.

Note: A preseason questionnaire was sent out to all Maryland high school baseball coaches in Mid-January to gain pertinent information for this piece but not all forms were completed and returned. Below is a compilation of information received as well as thoughts from our staff at PBR Maryland.

2020 Season Preview

FAVORITES

Charles H. Flowers Jaguars: 5th year head coach George Brown and the Jaguars will look to reclaim the Prince George’s County title in 2020 with five returning starters and four arms back on the mound. Star shortstop Treymane Cobb Jr. (Hartford) has since graduated but Brown still believes that this year’s team is balanced and one of the top teams around the county. On the mound, seniors Keith Wallace, Leonard Meade III, Sean Cordero, and junior Brandon Bradshaw will anchor the staff with top newcomer Donald Spriggs also figuring to make an impact as well. Wallace, Meade III, Cordero, and Bradshaw will also be key pieces in a lineup that also returns sophomore Raymond Smith. Look for other top newcomers Matthew May, Justice Flora, Derrick Caldwell-Myers, Lawrence Williams, and Marques Claiborne to play key roles throughout the season as they look to collectively replace Cobb Jr., Jaydon Whitehead, Terrell Delaney, and Josh Cochrane.

Eleanor Roosevelt Raiders: Roosevelt captured the Prince George’s County Championship over Gwynn Park in 2019 and looks poised to defend that title in 2020 with their two top arms returning. First Team All County selections Todd Murphy and Brian Bailey combined to go 14-1 on the mound for the Raiders in 2019 striking out a combined 102 batters in 81.1 innings pitched. Murphy took the team’s lone loss on the bump against Sherwood in the MPSSAA 4A State Semifinal finishing 7-1 on the season while Bailey finished a perfect 7-0. Senior 2019 First Team All County selection Cejay Hopkins will anchor a lineup that looks to replace fellow First Team All County SS/C Derek Ohringer. Roosevelt went undefeated in county last season finishing the year 20-1 overall.

CONTENDERS

Oxon Hill Clippers: 5th year head coach Cornell Simms led Oxon Hill to a 10-4-1 record in 2019 and looks to build upon that success this year with senior First Team All County left-handed pitcher Kyree Clark returning to anchor the staff. In addition to Clark, the Clippers return three other arms that saw time on the mound in righties Jerone Scott Jr., James Dawkins, and Reginald Clark. At the plate, Simms returns nine players that started games in 2019. Seniors K. Clark, Scott Jr., Tyler Smith, juniors Syncere Moore, Emmanuel Barnes, Leonard Mcferson, Dawkins, and sophomores Andre Hockaday and R. Clark look to fill the void left behind by Paul Reid, Nicholas Fennell, and Kevin Olivias. Look for freshman Emmanuel Rodriguez and Jordan Warren to also find roles on this year’s team adding depth in the lineup and on the mound.

Parkdale Panthers: The Panthers look to be strong contenders for the Prince George’s County title in 2020 returning senior shortstop Chris Osorio and senior first basemen Roger Guzman. Osorio hit .578 with 6 home runs and 15 RBI’s while Guzman batted .441, slugged .661 and drove in 20 runs of his own last year.
