6.24 Western Maryland Prospect ID Outfield Analysis

The 2015 Prep Baseball Report Western Maryland Prospect ID took place Wednesday, June 24th at Frederick Community College in Frederick, MD.  30 prospects from the class of 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 participated in the event.

Over the course of this week we will be releasing position-by-position analysis articles with scouting reports on each player and identifying the top prospects.  Two-way prospects will appear in a position analysis as well as pitching analysis.  We shall identify top prospect in each area and identify a younger talent (2018 or 2019) as a Future Watch if applicable

Today we look at the outfielders that participated in the event:

Top Prospects

Ryan Brown OF 2016 St. James
Athletic frame at 5-foot-10 170-pounds.  Has a loose arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm slot.  Throws are consistent and have carry on them at 85 mph. Fluid footwork and a clean exchange from an athletic fielding position. Hits from a balanced set up with a smooth load and slight leg kick.  Does get lower half involvement in swing and has good balance.  Fast bat speed with a short swing and extension through contact.  Gap-to-gap type hitter with rhythm. Exit velocity was 88 mph and 60 yard dash was 6.79.

Jack Stines OF/1B Urbana 2017
Athletic frame at 5-foot-11 165-pounds.  Raw player that will increase his ability as he becomes more fluid with some of his actions.  From the outfield has a long arm action from an almost over-the-top arm angle at 80 mph.  Makes consistent throws with average carry.  Had fluid footwork and a clean and slightly long exchange.  Has fluid footwork at first base with a clean exchange.  Hits from an open stance with a longer stride. Keeps balance throughout his swing.  Has quick bat speed and a level, almost uphill bat path.  Shows pull side power and strong hands. Lots of potential from hitter with his 91 mph exit velocity.  Ran a 6.8 60 yard dash. 

Blake Dougherty OF 2016 Boonsboro
Long athletic frame at 6-foot-2 180-pounds.  Has a loose arm action from a high ¾ arm slot in the outfield.  Makes consistent throws with some carry on them at 81 mph.  Shows fluid footwork average hands, and a clean exchange. At the plate the left handed hitter hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load, short stride and some balance in swing.  Show quick hands with a level bat path. That gets around the ball at times. Gap-to-gap type hitter with an exit velocity of 74 mph. 

Future Watch

Spencer McNamee 3B/OF/RHP 2019 St. James
Athletic frame with growing left to do at 5-foot-7 145-pounds.  Has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm angle.  Throws have some carry on them at 77 mph.  Fluid footwork and quick and clean exchange.  Has clean hands at third base, with nice exchange.  Hits from an athletic set up with a short stride. Average bat speed and at this point is more ready from the right side than left but should continue to get better as he matures and gets stronger. Best exit velocity was 79 mph and ran a 7.16 60 yard dash.

Sam Ewing LHP/OF/1B Sherwood HS 2019
Defensively has a loose arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle in the outfield.  Shows fluid footwork and clean exchange.  Consistent accuracy with an outfield velocity of 67 mph.  Clean footwork at first base with solid exchange.  Offensively hits from a balanced set up with average bat speed.  Has a short and quick load with high hands.  Short in and out bat path. Exit velocity of 71 mph.  Ran a 7.87 60 yard dash.

Andrew Fritz RHP/OF 2016 North Carroll
Compact frame at 5-foot-6 145-pounds.  Has a short arm action throwing from a low ¾ arm angle form the outfield.  Makes accurate throws at 70 mph.  Clean exchange.  Hits from a balanced set up with average bat speed and a smooth load.  Has a short stride with a level bat path.  Pull side type hitter with good rhythm in his swing.  Exit velocity was 67 mph and he ran a 7.20 60 yard dash.  On the mound, Fritz throws from a high ¾ arm angle with average arm speed and a free arm action.  Has controlled balance and pitches with regular effort.  Fastball has slight run and sink action at 70 mph.  Throws a 10/4 breaking ball at 63 mph with a 66 mph change up with cut and near fastball arm speed.

Jacob House OF/1B 2017 Middletown
Athletic frame at 5-foot-11 160-pounds. Throws from a high ¾ arm angle with a long action.  Throws are consistent and have average carry on them at 80 mph.  Has a clean exchange and fluid footwork but gets on heels.  Hits from a slightly open stance with a short stride.  Has good balance in swing with a level bat path. Ran a 6.94 60 yard dash and had an exit velocity of 72 mph. 

Sam Steinberg OF/3B/1B Walt Whitman
Solid frame at 5-foot-10 180-pounds.  Has a short arm action from a ¾ arm slot.  Throws have average carry on them at 76 mph.  Has a clean exchange and could work through ball a bit more to get off heels.  Has a solid arm across the infield at 75 mph and could increase following his throws more.  Hits from a balanced set up with a short stride and average bat speed.  Has a short path that is in and out of the zone.  A gap-to-gap type hitter with rhythm in his swing.  Exit velocity was 78 mph and ran a 7.68 60 yard dash.
