Prospect Watch: Outfielders

The Maryland Insider covers a wide variety of information on players in the state. We will cover events, players to watch, rankings, best in class, and many more topics that will cover the many levels of high school baseball.

Prospect Watch is focused on players that can help college programs over the summer. The core focus is on the players that the PBR Maryland staff have been able to cover in depth. This edition of Prospect Watch is on outfielders to keep an eye on along with the summer program they are with.

Andrew Anawalt Severna Park 2016
Hits from a balanced set up with rhythm in his stance. Has an aggressive approach with a short swing to the ball with some potential pull side pop.  Line-drive type hitter that uses all field. 4.45 home-to-first.  Has average carry on throws from the outfield with quick exchange and release. Anawalt will be attending the Top Prospect games this summer and plays his summer ball with the Severna Park Spikes 17u program.

Ryan Brown St. James 2016
An athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 170-pounds.  Brown showed solid footwork in the outfield with good hands and a clean exchange. He works thru the ball and throws from an over-the-top arm angle with a long arm action at a consistent 82 mph with some carry and accuracy. Offensively he hits from a slightly open stance with balance throughout his swing. He has quick hands and good bat speed and gets slightly long at times.  He is line drive type hitter with an exit velocity of 86 mph. Has been recorded at 6.8 in 60 time and that time has reportedly dropped. Brown is playing summer ball with the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox and will be attending the Maryland Top Prospect Games.  

LaVale Hodges Archbishop Spalding 2016
Hodges in an athletic outfielder with a solid an athletic frame at 6-foot, 200-pounds. Has a short path to the ball and shows quick bat speed.  Gap-to-gap type hitter with extension through contact.  Quick and confident first step and quick reactions.  Hodges is playing his summer ball with the Rawlings A’s and will be attending the Maryland Top Prospect Games.

Nathaniel Lowe Cambridge South Dorchester 2016
Compact athletic frame at 5-foot-10 150-pounds that has room to fill out. Short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot with carry on his throws at 82 mph.  He displays fluid footwork and does a good job working through the baseball from the outfield.  Quick First step with a 60 time of 6.73.  Offensively, Lowe has a short swing with quick bat speed. He gets slightly stacked on his backside, line drive type hitter with potential pop.  Hitting from an athletic and balanced setup, his exit velocity is 88 mph. Lowe is playing his summer ball with the East Coast Titans and will be attending the Maryland Top Prospect Games.

James Moses Loyola Blakefield 2017
5-foot-7 160-pound frame.  Defensively throws from a high ¾ arm slot and his throws had slight carry and were accurate at 79 mph. He works through the ball well with clean footwork.  Offensively, Moses hits from an athletic setup with a short, simple load.  He was short to the ball and showed average bat speed. His exit velocity was 73 mph. Moses also pitches at 76-77 mph from the left side making him a potential two way prospect. Plays his summer ball with the Rawlings A’s 17u gold.

Justin Oakley Riverdale Baptist 2017
Athletic and solid frame at 5-foot-11 185-pounds.  He throws from an over-the-top arm angle with average hands and a clean exchange.  He plays thru the ball well and showed some carry on his throws at 76 mph.  Oakley hits from an athletic and balanced setup.  He has simple load and good balance throughout his swing.  He shows potential pull side power and is a gap-to-gap type hitter right now.  His exit velocity was 76 mph and ran a 7.00 60-yard dash. Oakley plays his summer ball with the Demarini Starts 16u red. 

Adante Rhodes Riverdale Baptist 2016
Compact and athletic frame at 5-foot-9 170-pounds. He threw from a high ¾ arm slot at 77 mph.  He does a good job of working thru the baseball with a clean exchange and fluid footwork. On the offensive end, Rhodes displays quick hands and quick bat speed but gets slightly long at times.  He has good balance with a level swing and is a gap-to-gap type hitter.  His exit velocity was 83 mph and he ran a 6.90 60 yard dash.  Rhodes stole 31 bases this spring at Riverdale and is playing his summer ball with the Maryland RedHawks.  He will also be attending the Maryland Top Prospect Games.

Matthew Smith Parkside 2016
6-foot-2 190-pound physical and athletic frame that swings from the left side. Showed a level path and a quick bat with pop at the plate. Stayed inside the ball well and used the middle of the field with good extension. Smith will be attending the Maryland Top Prospect Games and will play his summer ball with the Marrucci Stars red.

Nicholas Torroella Mount. St. Joseph 2017
Nice frame at 5-foot-10, 160-pounds. Throws from a high ¾ arm slot and made accurate throws with some carry at 83 mph. There is more in the tank once he gets momentum all moving forward. Offensively, he hit from an athletic and balanced set up.  He has a level bat path and slightly up hill with an exit velocity of 71 mph.  Another Potential two-way prospect, Torroella currently pitches at 78 mph with potential to increase.  He will be attending the Maryland Top Prospect Games and is also playing his summer ball with the Rawlings A’s 17u green. 

Dillon Waters Southern 2016
Strong and solid frame at 5-foot-11. The outfielder has a short path to the ball with extension through contact. Can get a little stiff on finish. Gap-to-gap type hitter with a quick and consistent first step. Throws from the outfield were accurate and had some carry on them. Waters is playing his summer ball with the Maryland Monarchs 17u this summer and will be attending the Top Prospect Games.
