Fastball Spin Rates
The average fastball spin rate at the MLB level can range from 2050-2250 rpm. The average at the high school level will be lower, but can be hard to track as most pitchers that are getting spin rate readings, are typically more advanced. When looking at fastball spin rates, coaches and scouts are looking for pitchers that are outside the norm. High spin rate fastball, typically, tend to ride on hitter, creating swing and miss, and playing at the top of the strike zone. Low spin rate guys, typically, are creating some sink on their fastball, or the appearance that the fastball is diving.
The pure spin rate does not tell the whole story on any one pitch. Coaches and scouts are also evaluating spin efficiency and spin direction. They also want to see some consistency, pitch-to-pitch, on the release point. To learn more about Trackman data and what it all means, click here.
Name | Position | School | Class | Total Spin |
Drew Trevino | RHP/1B | Flushing | 2022 | 2220 |
Jacob Anderson | SS/RHP | Notre Dame Prep | 2021 | 2178 |
Gavin Moczydlowsky | RHP/2B | Huron | 2023 | 2173 |
Jake Verellen | SS/RHP | Eisenhower | 2022 | 2068 |
Jake Keaser | RHP/1B | Orchard Lake | 2021 | 2057 |
Fastball Horizontal Break
Horizontal break is the distance, measured in inches, between where the pitch actually crosses the front of home plate side-wise, and where it would have crossed home plate side-wise if had it traveled in a perfectly straight line from release. A positive number means the break was to the right from the pitcher’s perspective, while a negative number means the break was to the left from the pitcher’s perspective. Name | Position | School | Class | Horizontal Break |
Drew Trevino | RHP/1B | Flushing | 2022 | 15.3 |
Gavin Moczydlowksy | RHP/2B | Huron | 2023 | 14.6 |
Jacob Verellen | SS/RHP | Eisenhower | 2022 | 14.5 |
Joseph Dorch | OF/RHP | Bloomfield Hills | 2021 | 14.5 |
Jake Anderson | SS/RHP | Notre Dame Prep | 2021 | 13.4 |
Fastball Vertical Break
Vertical break is the distance, measured in inches, between where the pitch actually crosses the front of home plate height-wise, and where it would have crossed home plate height-wise if had it traveled in a perfectly straight line from release, but affected by gravity. Name | Position | School | Class | Vertical Break |
Drew Trevino | RHP/1B | Flushing | 2022 | 18.0 |
Jacob Anderon | SS/RHP | Notre Dame Prep | 2021 | 17.1 |
Gavin Moczydlowsky | RHP/2B | Huron | 2023 | 16.8 |
Jake Keaser | RHP/1B | Orchard Lake | 2021 | 15.9 |
Jake Verellen | SS/RHP | Eisenhower | 2022 | 15.1 |
Breaking Ball Spin Rates
Typically bigger spin can mean bigger break, but again on the breaking ball the spin efficiency can play a part. There are also studies that show the speed of the pitch can affect if the spin rate has a chance to take hold and create the break a pitcher is looking for.
