Zac Jones SS / Stoney Creek, MI / 2021

OAKLAND TOWNSHIP - Zac Jones first connected with Ball State head coach Rich Maloney when he was in charge of the Michigan program.

“He got me a signed mini-bat when I went to one of their camps,” reflected Jones back to his childhood days.

The Stoney Creek junior has gotten to know Maloney and his staff a lot more during a recruiting process that has ended in a commitment to Ball State.

“I started talking around March with assistant coach (Blake) Beemer,” the 25th-rated 2021 in Michigan related. “He was at almost all my games in the summer and talked to my coach about me. I did research on their staff, their reputation and the school. There was also the connection with coach Maloney from when he was at Michigan.”

An unofficial visit took place a little more than a month ago.

“I fell in love with the campus and the feel of it,” the 6-1 170-pounder said. “Maybe two weeks after that I got an offer. It took me a week to decide.”

Offers were on the table from Central Michigan and Evansville, with interest also coming from St. John’s, Xavier, Western Kentucky, Illinois State and Purdue.

“I never really rushed myself,” Jones said about making a decision during his recruitment. “I knew if I found what was right I wouldn’t be afraid to make a commitment.”

The fifth-ranked junior shortstop in the state discovered what he was looking for at the Mid-American Conference school in Muncie, Ind.

“The facilities were really nice, indoors and outdoors,” Jones said about what stood out about Ball State.

Jones left an impression with the coaches as well.
