Sean Latham C / OF / Lakeland, MI / 2024

COMMERCE TWP. - The recruiting process has kept Sean Latham busy as he searches for the perfect college fit.

“I’m reaching out by email to D-II schools, some smaller D-I schools, NAIA and D-III schools,” the incoming senior at Lakeland High School related. “I’m corresponding with Western (Michigan) and Saginaw (Valley State) and received my first offer from Adrian College. They have great facilities and the coaches there are really good.

“PBR definitely helped. I went to the Top Prospect Games and got exposure there. Adrian reached out from that showcase and asked me to come on a visit. He said they saw me at the Top Prospect Games.”

An offer brought a sense of calmness to the seventh-rated 2024 catcher in Michigan.

“Recruiting has been kind of stressful, but the first offer brought a little relief knowing I have a chance to play college baseball,” explained Latham, who has camps ahead at Butler, Saginaw Valley, Morehead State and Central Michigan. “I’ve been in contact with Adam Goodwin and he’s been helping me with what I should do. I’m using Field Level, Twitter, YouTube Channel and posting videos from PBR.”

Goodwin, the PBR Michigan Director of Scouting, sees a bright future for Latham.

“Sean is a versatile player who can fit in behind the plate and in the outfield with a sub-7.0 60,” Goodwin said. “He has a strong arm from the outfield and catching position and an internal desire to strive big. Coaches will need to keep tabs as he rounds out his play at the plate.”

Latham was pleased with his recent performance at the Top Prospect Games to begin his summer.

“I established myself at the Procase and solidified and improved my numbers at the Top Prospect Games,” noted Latham, who has played primarily catcher in high school and summer ball while also seeing time in the outfield. “I’ve really improved my metrics to be a guy getting noticed. I hit the weight room hard which has helped up those numbers. Increased strength has correlated onto the field, where I’m hitting the ball harder, throwing it harder and able to catch longer.”

More work lies ahead for the 42nd-rated uncommitted 2024 in the state.

“I need more consistency,” Latham admitted. “I have hot streaks and then cool down. If I stay more consistent that will be big for me.”

Leadership is one area that the sixth-ranked uncommitted senior catcher in Michigan believes he can bring to a program.

“I’m one of the best leaders you’ll ever meet,” Latham said. “I hold teammates and myself accountable but not to the point of being bossy.”

The desire to play college baseball has been there for some time.

“Right around the time I realized baseball was my best sport, when I was playing 10U-11U travel ball, my interest took off,” the recently-turned 17-year-old reflected. “I was having the most fun with baseball of all the sports I was playing and my dream was to continue playing baseball. Once I got to high school it became even more of a dream.”

The 80th-ranked incoming senior in Michigan has an idea of what he is looking for in a college.

“I want to go to a spot I can call home for four years,” related the 3.0 student looking to major in business/athletic training. “I want to go to a place that will develop me as a player to be the best I can be, that also fits the academic side I’m interested in.

“I’d like to go south where the weather is warmer, a bigger school out of state, but if that doesn’t work out I’m okay with it. I’d just prefer to find a bigger school before football.”

A quarterback on the Lakeland football team, the 6-0 175-pounder looks forward to the rest of his recruiting process as his senior year of high school approaches.

“Hopefully, there will be more visits and I’m able to see all the schools I’m interested in and that are interested in me,” Latham concluded. “Hopefully, in the next three or four months I’ll commit.”
