LIVONIA - Interest from nearly all of the biggest colleges in Michigan was there. Only Central Michigan was not in the mix.

But then that changed.

“They came aboard pretty late,” Brendan Lowry said of CMU, where the Livonia Christian incoming senior recently made his college commitment. “I was heavy in my recruiting process with Eastern but then Central sent a text and asked me to come visit.

“It felt great,” continued Lowry, who had also visited Michigan, attended a camp at Michigan State and also had discussions with Western Michigan, Wayne State and Toledo. “I got along with the coaches and there was one kid on the team that took me around campus and talked to me about life there. It was very comfortable. It seemed fun to be there with the team and the coaches were really professional. I feel they can help me become the best baseball player I can be.”

The 5-10 180-pounder has been working on that.

“I’ve been lifting to try and get faster and squatting to try and get my legs stronger,” the seventh-ranked 2020 in the state noted. “I’ve also worked hard on my approach at the plate and getting aggressive on all pitches. I’ve also worked to improve my base running which needs help.”

CMU saw plenty about Lowry that can benefit the Mid-American Conference program.

“They like my bat and my defense,” Lowry pointed out. “The like how aggressive I am at the plate and in the outfield. They also like my speed and base running and my baseball IQ.”

A shortstop until moving to the outfield this year, Lowry has made strides there as well.

“I’ve improved a lot as I’ve grown older,” said Lowry, who this summer has played center field for the Michigan Bulls. “My arm strength has improved a lot and my athletic ability has really helped me in the outfield. With lifting and getting stronger, my speed has also really increased.”

One area Lowry is taking a stab at as well is pitching.
