Luke Shilling (MI) Opens Eyes With Easy Heat

To say RHP/C Luke Shilling (Notre Dame Prep, MI) has taken the national stage by storm would be an understatement. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound righty set an event record at the 2015 Super 60 by hitting 95 mph with his fastball and sat 93-95 in his bullpen session. That got scouts talking, as he was not exactly on their radar—at least as a pitcher.
Back in September, Shilling was a power-hitting catcher and first baseman committed to Cincinnati. At a youth tryout for the Michigan Bulls, dressed in just shorts and sneakers, he decided to mess around on the mound with a radar gun pointing at him. He has shown arm strength from behind the plate so the 88s and 89s that popped up probably weren’t a complete surprise, but it got people thinking. Some suggested he throw a bullpen and see how he felt.
“It just blew up from there,” Shilling said.
