Reagan Paulina SS / 2B / Detroit Catholic Central, MI / 2020

HIGHLAND - Division II colleges were all over Reagan Paulina after the Top Prospect Games in late June. But then came Oakland.

“It all started after the Top Prospect Games at Eastern,” the Detroit Central Catholic senior said about his recruitment. “Quite a few schools reached out to me after that. Ashland and Northwood offered and Oakland started coming to my games.

“They liked how I command the field with my leadership and glove,” Paulina added about Oakland. “They’re looking for a shortstop that can lead the team in the right direction. Fielding has always been my strong suit and they like how I have a voice talking on the field and in the dugout.”

Paulina feels he is the answer to helping Oakland make strides after committing to the Horizon League school.

“I see myself bringing a leadership mentality to the program,” said the top-rated uncommitted shortstop in Michigan at the time of his college decision. “I like to keep a positive attitude. They look like a team that believes in family, that has fun and plays loose. I’ll help contribute to that.”

The 5-11 160-pounder took visits to Grand Valley State, Kalamazoo and Saginaw Valley in addition to Ashland and Northwood, while interest also came from Wofford, Michigan State, Kennesaw State, Stetson and Wright State. But the opportunity to attend a Division I college less than 45 minutes from home was too much to pass up for Paulina.

“I went on a visit in August and they offered on the visit,” Paulina reflected. “I committed two weeks ago. The coach didn’t put any pressure on, which I like. This is a decision about the next four years and they gave me time to feel things out and make the right choice.”
