Pre-Season Preview: Flint Powers Catholic HS (Saginaw Valley South)

Division III Flint Powers Catholic is a perennial powerhouse in a lot of sports, and baseball is no exception. This year should be no different.

In 2012, Flint Powers Catholic finished their season 24-11 and shared a conference championship with Davison.  Their final record in conference was 9-3.  In 2013 a few changes have been made, and now they find themselves making a conference switch to the Saginaw Valley South.

They will return 4 starters and two returning pitchers.  The most notable player returning is No. 33 and 2012 First-Team All-State selection, Ethan Wiskur.

Wiskur had received plenty of attention this past summer from Division I schools, but ultimately chose to commit to Hillsdale.  Wiskur packs a punch from both the mound and at the plate.  He nearly hit .500 last season and sits 87-89 mph when on the mound.

Other returners who will play pivotal roles for Flint Powers Catholic are middle infielder Garret Pougnet and left-hand Spencer Stalzer. Pougnet, an exceptional athlete who will most likely be a quarterback at the next level, hit .460 last season and stabilizes the middle infield when Wiskur is on the mound.  Stalzer is Mr. Consistent.  He had a 2.91 ERA from the mound in 2012.

Brett Wiskur, Ethan's younger brother should make his way into the Flint Powers lineup as well.

Head Coach Tom Dutkowski had this to say about the younger Wiskur and his up and coming players, "I am looking forward to seeing Brett Wiskur join his brother on the varsity.  I want to see how the dynamic plays out. And, I want to see how all our scrappy young guys develop."

Flint Powers once again should be a team to watch in 2013.  If they get hot at the right time, they could make a run in the state tournament.
