Scouting Notes: Hudsonville vs Sterling Heights Stevenson

By Bobby Walmsley

Two highly ranked teams equals a lot of high end talent on the field.  Here is a look at some of the players from No. 11 Hudsonville and No. 3 Sterling Heights Stevenson.

Zach Melcher, OF, Stevenson HS, 2013
On his way to Division III powerhouse Marietta College next year, Melcher is a good athlete and solid all-around ball player.  He demonstrated above average arm strength from the outfield, and quiet, disciplined approach at the plate.  Melcher has the ability to be a high average line-drive hitter at the next level.

Brandon Hughes, OF/LHP, Stevenson HS, 2014
The switch-hitting Michigan commit had a quiet day, although he did not get many pitches to hit.  Flashed plus batspeed from both sides of the plate, and was a 4.17 down the line from the rightside.

Nate Boschma, OF/2B, Hudsonville, 2013
The Northwood commit projects as an outfielder at the next level.  Boschma put together solid at-bats on Friday, and I liked his approach at the plate.  As an athletic left-handed hitter, Boschma has a knack for finding the barrel, and he possess the potential to hit for a good average near the top of the lineup at the Division II level.

Robert Greenman, C, Hudsonville, 2013
The Central Michigan commit validated why many regard him as the best catcher in the class of 2013 in Michigan.  In the high school level, I can’t imagine that there is a better blocker and receiver in this state.  Greenman has great flexibility in his lower half and hips, and sways behind the baseball effortlessly while maintaining complete command of his pitching staff.
