'Unique' Opportunity For Helgeson At Eastern

Tyler Helgeson RHP / SS / Portage Northern, MI / 2019

PORTAGE - Tyler Helgeson calls it a “unique” opportunity.

What is it?

The chance to be a two-way player at the next level. The Portage Northern senior will have that at Eastern Michigan after a recent commitment to the Mid-American Conference school.

“They like me as an athlete and they like my arm,” explained Helgeson, a right-hand pitcher and left-handed hitting shortstop rated ninth in the state in the 2019 class. “They see me as a two-way. It’s unique to do both in college.”

Western Michigan and Central Michigan were among the others high on the list of the 6-4 185-pounder.

“I don’t know if it’s the main reason, but I like being in the lineup every day,” Helgeson said about the decision to make Eastern Michigan his college choice. “The main reason was I felt the coaches wanted me. I felt they really were sincere. I like that they’re young coaches. They talked about how they want to change Eastern into a winning program and they felt I could be a part of that.”

It was just less than a year ago that Eastern’s interest in Helgeson materialized.
