Domey 'Excited For What's To Come' At Michigan State

NEW BALTIMORE - At 6-1 and 240 pounds, Isaiah Domey is an imposing figure on the ball diamond. When speed comes into play to go along with his power, the top-rated 2025 first baseman in the state is hard not to notice.

Eyes of a large number of colleges were definitely on the 16-year-old at the Future Games this summer, including Michigan State, which eventually presented the Anchor Bay High School junior an offer.

“They saw me a couple of times over the summer and saw me at the Future Games,” Domey related. “On Aug. 1 we were in contact and we kept talking after that. I went on a visit to a football game and went to another game on Oct. 4 and that’s when I committed.”

Domey, whose offer from MSU had come a month earlier on Sept. 1, also had offers from Toledo and Wright State along with interest from the likes of Purdue, Northwestern, Missouri, Florida State and Texas Tech.

“I’ve always been a Michigan State fan, so when they offered I was super excited to have an opportunity to go to a school I’ve always liked,” explained Domey, a standout running back and middle linebacker in football who also considered playing two sports at the next level.

“I’ve always loved both sports, but in thinking about it I really want to play college baseball,” Domey said. “On Aug.1 it became a reality. That’s when I realized I can see myself playing baseball in college.”

What Michigan State saw in the 15th-ranked junior throughout all of Michigan is obvious.

“They like my power, my speed and that I can play first base and outfield,” explained Domey, whose combination of 97 exit velocity to go along with 6.60 speed in the 60 certainly makes an impression.

Working hard to improve all aspects of his play has benefitted the cause.

“I’ve been working on the little things with my game … my approach, my speed, my strength,” Domey noted. “I’ve been learning more about the game and improving on the little things. That’s translated to stealing bases, timing up pitchers and my approach on certain pitches.”

High school coach Jared Biesbrouck and travel coaches Tony and Scott Leonard along with Aaron Fields, his hitting coach since the age of 10, are credited by Domey with playing a huge role in a baseball journey that became more clear at the end of summer.

“With the new rule change I wasn’t talking to anyone until Aug. 1,” Domey said about his recruiting process. “I hadn’t talked to many before the change. But I played a good summer and then the Future Games definitely brought more exposure. Taking calls on Aug. 1 wasn’t too stressful, it was good.”

As was making a commitment to the school he has been a fan of growing up.

“It felt awesome to know what I was going to do and not have to worry about my recruitment any more,” related Domey, whose initial interest in becoming a fan of the university in East Lansing came when a cousin gave him “a bunch of Michigan State clothes.”

While excited about making a college decision, Domey has not changed his commitment to the game.

“I need to develop and learn more,” Domey explained. “I need to play more and see better pitchers. I’m working on strength, speed and agility.”

When it comes to making an impact at the Big 10 school two hours from home, Domey has a long list as far as what he feels he can provide.

“Definitely leadership,” Domey said. “Stealing bags, power, playing good D at first base and in the outfield. I’ll bring all of that.”

Undecided on a college major, the 3.3 student at Anchor Bay sees a lot to look forward to at Michigan State.

“It’s not too far from home so my family can see me play,” concluded Domey, who has a Michigan State decal in his bedroom to go along with a large attire of hoodies and MSU shirts. “Playing in the Big 10, especially with the conference expanding, is going to be fun. I’m just excited for what’s to come.”
