Two Rivers - 4 vs. St. Thomas - 3

7pm @ Richfield High School

Miller who is verbally committed to attend Ohio State University was good early and then struggled some  with command in the middle innings. The right-hander’s fastball had good velocity at 87-88 mph and showed arm side run/sink. Using mainly a two-pitch mix the breaking ball was 77-78 mph, tight at times with average break.

+ AJ Boyken opposed Miller for Two Rivers. Boyken who is a 2022 grad competed through each inning and eventually went all 7 for the complete game. The fastball was 77-79 mph and was around the zone with each one of his pitches mixing speeds with a breaking ball and showing change-up.

Hutchinson - 1 vs. Delano - 3

5pm @ Delano Municipal Baseball Park

6AAA Semifinal

It came down to wire in the second round of the 6AAA sections between 2 seed Delano and 3 Seed Hutchinson

+ Starting on the mound for Delano was AJ Rasmussen. Rasmussen was on cruise control the whole way until Hutchinson’s last inning rally where they had the game winning run-on base but came up just short. Rasmussen was sitting 84-86 T87 and his breaking ball was 71-73. His ability to throw both pitches for strikes was how he was able to make it the distance and only give up 1 run

+ The Tigers offense was powered by Minnesota-Duluth commit Oran Hinkle who roped a ball into left field for a 2 RBI single that extended Delano’s lead to 3 runs.

+ For Hutchinson, Tate Renning hit a couple balls hard and had a nice drag bunt to start a rally for the tigers but eventually fell just short of a comeback in the 7th inning

6pm @ Chaska Athletic Park

2AAAA Semifinal

It was a pitcher’s duel Wednesday night at Chaska Athletic Park in the second round of the 2AAAA playoffs between the home team Chaska Hawks and the visiting team Shakopee Sabers

Starting on the mound for Chaska was 2022 Nolan Kemp. The St. Thomas recruit was sitting 87-89 T90 mph with his fastball while keeping hitters off balance with his 75-77 breaking ball. Kemp ended up only surrendering 1 hit while striking out 13.

As far as the offense goes for Chaska, the only 2 hits came from an early single from Kemp which was then followed by a big double to right center from Northern State commit Dayne McNaughton which gave Chaska the early 1-0 lead.

For Shakopee, senior Vinny Schleper had himself a career night. Schleper was pounding the strike zone with his 78-81 mph fastball and kept hitters honest with his 67-70 mph slider. At one point in the game, Schleper retired 16 hitters in a row and ended up only allowing 2 hits while striking out 4 without allowing any free passes.

+ The Raiders started RHP and St. Mary’s commit Eric Stomberg. Stomberg’s fastball was 84-86 mph with run, curveball was at 71-72 mph and 11/5 break that showed 12/6 potential. The righty has a longer lean frame and arm works well.

+ The offense saw production from both 2022 Cooper Smith (St. Thomas) and 2023 Jack Taxdahl (Minnesota). Smith handled the bat well with couple of hard-hit balls to generate short rallies. While Taxdahl showed quality at bats with discipline and had solid contact during his plate appearances.

+ Stillwater looked to 2022 Brayden Hellum. Hellum is an athletic player who plays with high energy. He hits lead off, helped the offense with a couple of hits and was always part of the burst of runs. On the  mound, Hellum spots well and can locate. The fastball velo was upper 70s to low 80s and saw swing and miss from the off-speed.

+ More offense came from 2022s Jacob Carlson and Austin Buck. 2023 Alex Matchey also provided a key hit to help spark a rally late. Overall, the Ponies have good discipline, team orientated, play hard and capitalized on the Raiders mistakes.

May 26th

Elk River - 0 vs Chaska - 9

7pm @ Chaska Athletic Park

+ The Metro West Champs finished their regular season on a high note not only with a victory last night but winning their last 14 games. They have had quiet the year and last night was no different. 2022 Dayne McNaughton who is a Northern State commit took the mound for the Hawks. The two-way player catches when he doesn’t pitch and has been a consistent player for the squad all year.  McNaughton was 82-84 mph topping at 85 mph. Challenging hitters all night with the fastball and was consistently around the zone with a two-pitch mix, the other being a 68-70 mph breaking ball.

+ The Hawks offense saw contributions from a majority of players. Highlighted by both 2022 Nolan Kemp (St. Thomas) and 2022 Henry Bushey (Minnesota-Duluth) who each drove in a pair of runs. Kemp like McNaughton has been a key part of the lineup both in the box and on the mound

+ Tommy Hanson (Minnesota-Duluth) came in relief for Chaska after McNaughton. The left-handed hitting, left-handed throwing was solid in his relief appearance. Athletic frame, and arm works well from a high ¾ slot. The fastball works down hill with tilt at 82-84 mph and showed a 67-69 mph breaking ball.

+ 2024 Sam Stockman took the ball for Elk River. An intriguing young arm in the class, that shows pitch-ability, a clean arm and throws from multiple arm angles. Fastball has plenty of arm side run at 81-83 mph, shows an above average feel for a 70-72 mph curveball, and also mixes in a 73-74 mph change-up. Stockman will be an arm to monitor in Minnesota’s 2024 class.

+ Jack Mausser continues to have a solid spring campaign. Mausser left the yard to left center for his 5th home run of the year. The NIACC commit starts with an open stance, rhythm into the swing, and shows strength from his 5-foot-11, 185-pound frame.

+ Rogers ran out three underclass arms in Jack Berry, Riane Ritter and Noah Gordon -- three arms that could help lead not only this year, but in the future as well. Berry, who is a 2023 graduate, showed good feel for three pitches. His fastball was 80-82 mph that topped 83 mph, a 67-68 mph curveball, and 73-74 mph change-up. 2024 grad Ritter was consistently around the zone. The young arm’s fastball was 81-83 mph, 72-73 mph curveball, and 75-76 mph change-up. Ritter might be an arm to monitor in the future. Two-way talent and one of the higher ranked uncommitted players in the state Noah Gordon also threw for Rogers. A newer arm to the mound showed some pitchability with his fastball sitting 85-87 mph and topped 88 mph. Gordon also showed good feel for a breaking ball at 71-73 and flashed a change-up at 79-80 mph.

May 17th

St. Anthony Village - 5 vs. St. Paul Central - 0

7:00pm @ CHS Field, St. Paul

He wasted no time on the mound attacking hitters with a solid two pitch mix of a fastball at 85-87 mph and a sharp curveball at 70-73 mph. He allowed just one walk while striking out 13 on 89 pitches. Russell is currently ranked 36th in Minnesota’s 2023 class

Rockford - 7 vs. St. Louis Park - 5

11:00 @ St. Louis Park

+ Altmann’s Rockets struck first thanks to his RBI double. The left-handed hitting Altmann lashed a line drive to left field and he used his 6.6 speed to hustle into second. He was erased after he over-slid the base. The center fielder would add another RBI single in the third inning with a solid stroke to center and again utilized his speed to promptly swipe second. Altmann showed that he is capable of driving the ball to all fields and finished 2-for-4 with a double, single, stolen base and 2 RBI.

+ Hokenson’s Orioles stayed within striking distance for the majority of the game and the Orioles’ first baseman made his contributions known. The University of Minnesota commit drove in a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single just over the head of the infield and collected another hit in the sixth. Hokenson reached safely in all five plate appearances on the day, drawing three walks as Rockford pitched carefully around his potent bat in the middle of the order.
