Austin Heuer, RHP, Elk River, Class of 2015

PBR:  Why did you choose Carleton?

HEUER: Academics was a huge priority of mine when I decided on Carleton.  I plan to study biology and then go to medical school after I finish at Carleton.  I also liked that it is somewhat close to home and in a city similar to Elk River.

PBR:  What other schools were you considering?

HEUER: I was considering Macalester, Johns Hopkins, UW-Lacrosse and Hamline.

PBR:  Where did they first see you? How did your relationship develop with the coaching staff?

HEUER: I first visited Carleton in March of my junior year and really liked it.  Coach Rushing was able to come watch me play in the State Tournament and at a few showcases during the summer.  After talking with Coach Rushing, other members of the Carleton coaching staff, and the players, I decided that Carleton was the right fit.

PBR: What role do you expect to play your first year on campus?

HEUER: I hope to play as big of a role on the team as possible. I also hope to gain the respect of my teammates on and off the field.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

HEUER: My dad has definitely had a huge impact on my baseball career.  He has been a coach from tee ball until high school and always been there to help me when I need it. My mom and dad both support me by coming to almost every single one of my games for as long as I can remember

PBR: What have you worked on/improved since last year?

HEUER: I have spent a lot of time in the weight room working on getting bigger and stronger for the season.  I have also worked to improve my fastball velocity and better develop my change-up.

PBR: Who is the toughest player that you have faced in Minnesota?

HEUER: A few years ago I got a couple at bats against Logan Shore during a fall league.  I know I walked once but the other at bats didn't turn out too well. I also got to face Sam Hentges last year in the State Tournament. I would say he is the best all-around player I have played against because he could hit, but he was a tough pitcher.

PBR:  What are your thoughts on the recruiting process? Any advice for future players in your position.

HEUER: I would tell them to enjoy it because it only happens once. All of the years of hard work finally feel like they paid off when you get phone calls and emails from college coaches interested in you. I would also tell them to think about what matters the most to them when deciding on where to go to school.
