Evaluation: 6-foot, 185-pound catcher. Solid compact athletic build. Left-handed hitter who ran 6.84. Shows strength in bat. Front heel turn trigger. Rotational tendencies; will spin off at contact. 87 mph exit velocity off tee. Short clean arm action from OF with solid carry and accuracy. Clean arm action with 87 mph velocity. Usable defender in OF. Some length to exchange. Hitch in release. Mostly accurate throws. Solid receiver. Most throws on/around bag. 73 mph arm strength with 2.09 pop time. Strong follow with above avg. tool-set, above avg. runner, and versatile defensively. Bat is projectable with slight mechanical adjustments.

 

PBR: Why did you choose North Dakota State University?
MALEC: I loved everything about the campus and the baseball program. The school had everything to offer that I was looking for. 

PBR: What other schools were you considering?
MALEC: St. Cloud State University, College of St. Scholastica, University of St. Thomas and Creighton University. 

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?  
MALEC: They first saw me at the Top Prospect event in Vadnais Heights. The coaches stayed in touch since they saw me there.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?
MALEC: Yes, I’m very much relieved to have made my college decision. 

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?
MALEC: The campus and coaching staff were great. 

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
MALEC: My dad Jason Malec has helped me the most with my endeavors. 

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?
MALEC: I knew it was going to be a difficult process, so yes it was difficult. It is such an important decision on where you are going to go to college.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?
MALEC: They are looking at me as a versatile player with the ability to catch and also play in the outfield.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
MALEC: Taking 3rd place in the AA State Tournament was an unbelievable accomplishment and experience. 

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?
MALEC: Too many to pick just one. There are a lot of talented players in the state of Minnesota.
