As a player in middle school, Jacob Schlesener (Logan-Rogersville, 2015) didn't make a top traveling team in southwest Missouri. Other players were more physically mature than Schlesener. They threw harder, ran faster and hit with more power. Now, entering the spring of his junior year, Schelesner is ranked #11 in Missouri and headed to Fayetteville to play for Arkansas in 2016.
Schlesener is a 6-foot-2 170-pound left-handed pitcher and recently hit 87 MPH off the mound at the Midwest Nationals Showcase on January 12. At that time, Schlesener was narrowing his list of schools. Along with Arkansas, he was also getting interest from Missouri, Texas Christian and Missouri State.
"I wanted to go where I could become the best player without leaving the midwest," Schlesener said.
Schlesener's hard work his freshman year helped him have a memorable 2013 baseball season. In May his high school team, Logan-Rogersville, lost in the state semi-final to eventual champion Westminster, and finished with a 24-4 record During the summer, he tossed a no-hitter for the Midwest Nationals. In August, he was selected to the Midwest Futures Games in August. Now his is a Razorback and headed to the SEC.
Just weeks before the high school season starts, Schlesener has his sites set on getting back to the state championship. "I think that we have are going to be a very solid team again this year. We were in the final Four last year and our goal is to get back there and take another shot at the championship," says Schlesener.
Schlesener is an athletic lefty that combines pitchability with projection. His clean arm action, simple delivery and high ¾ arm slot. He has command of three pitches in the zone and has shown an increase in velocity since he played in the Midwest Futures Games. His fastball is currently at 87 MPH, with a curveball at 79-81 MPH and a change at 72-76 MPH.
He will join two players from Kansas, Isaiah Campbell (Olathe South) and Brendan Stanek (Blue Valley Southwest), as 2015 commits to Arkansas.
