Jefferson College Scout Day: Takeaways & Stat Leaders

On Friday, September 1st, the PBR Missouri staff traveled to the campus of Maryville University to house the St. Louis Area JUCO Scout Day, which featured four junior college programs from the area - East Central College, St. Charles CC, St. Louis CC, and Jefferson College. These four schools participated in a pro-style workout in front of our staff, collecting unrivaled data with the help of our tech partners as well as edited video footage.

Today we’ll turn our attention to Jefferson College, as 14 members from the Vikings’ program took part in the event. For a full roster of those in attendance, click HERE. To see all of the stats from the Jefferson College workout, click HERE.

Below you’ll learn more about the Vikings’ workout, including a few names that stood out to our scouting staff and stat leaders from the day.

TAKEAWAYS

+ Back after an impressive freshman season in which he slashed .379/.497/.586 with 22 extra-base hits in 145 at-bats, OF Joe Siervo (Parkway Central, 2022) figures to be every bit of an impact player for the Vikings this upcoming season. At 6-foot-1, 190-pounds, Siervo fills out the uniform with strength throughout and carries himself with a confident, professional presence between the lines. He swings a highly polished right-handed barrel, stays balanced, and showed easy pull-side juice without much effort. Siervo’s firmest ball came off his barrel at 97.7 mph, averaging 90.9 mph per swing, and eight of his batted balls registered at 95+ mph on our TrackMan. He’s a comfortable mover in the outfield (6.76 60) with a true arm that showed natural carry to home, topping at 90 mph. Siervo is certain to draw plenty of collegiate interest throughout the fall and into the off-season as an integral part of this year’s Vikings’ squad.


+ INF Greg LaChance (Anderson Collegiate Vocational Institute, 2022; CAN) performed well in a brief role for JeffCo last spring, slashing .318/.439/.576 with five home runs across 66 at-bats. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound sophomore took an impressive round of BP, backspinning baseballs with ease deep into the left-center gap from a simple, balanced, and fluid right-handed swing. LaChance had the second highest average batted distance (280 feet) as well as the third furthest batted ball (377 feet) of the event, with six of his 14 batted balls traveled further than 330 feet. Seven of LaChance’s barrels registered at 95+ mph or harder, with just one being under 90 mph. He’s a loose mover on the infield too with some bounce in the lower half and feel on the move, topping at 85 mph across the diamond on his hardest bullet.


+ CIF Jack Shanahan (Kirkwood, 2022) is a highly physical 6-foot-3, 225-pound athlete that flashed bat strength at this event. Shanahan worked almost exclusively to the pull-side from a long, level right-handed swing, elevating his furthest ball 358 feet, while swatting three others at 335+ feet. His hardest ball came off his bat at 101.1 mph and he had six total 95+ mph hits throughout his round. Shanahan showed noticeable bat speed (T82.4 mph) and hand speed (T26 mph), too.

+ Another sophomore bat on this JeffCo squad with impact potential at the plate: OF Daniel Flier (CBC, 2022). The 6-foot-2, 200-pound left-handed stick showed impressive bat speed (T85 mph) and controlled intent at the dish, hammering a handful of balls deep into the right-center gap throughout his round. Flier had five total 340+ foot swings to the right side, including three at 350+ feet with a 365 foot max, per TrackMan. He led the event in average batted distance by nearly 20 feet (299 ft.) and his ability to elevate the baseball while not impacting it at a high authoritative rate (94.5 mph max EV) is an impressive trait. Flier also ran a 6.93 60 and was up to 88 mph from the outfield. 


+ C Austin Almany (St. Pius X, 2022) is a strong, muscled-up 6-foot-1, 200-pound backstop to follow for the Vikings. Almany’s day started with a quality showing defensively, where he worked quick to release from a short arm window, popping accurately in the 1.94-to-2.00 range. Offensively, Almany looks to elevate the baseball with a pull-side approach, keeping his barrel through the hitting zone on a longer, level bat path.

+ Coming off an explosive final year at the high school level, C Ryan Stevens (CBC, 2023) has the potential to be an impact right-handed bat for the Vikings quickly into his collegiate career. Stevens packs plenty of strength into his 5-foot-11, 205-pound frame, generating noticeable bat speed with easy plus pull-side juice for his age. His three furthest batted balls travel 362 feet, 376 feet, and 378 feet, respectively, and he squared his hardest barrel up at 99.4 mph, averaging 94.7 mph per swing. Only one of Stevens’ hits was under 90 mph and just three of his 16 total swings registered at under 93 mph, per TrackMan. His inherent strength showed behind the plate, where Stevens peaked at 81 mph from the crouch with carry through his target, popping at 1.91-to-2.00.

+ An impact bat for Class 6 state runner-up Francis Howell this past spring season, INF Brady Wilson (2023) has the tools and physical projection that equate to a high ceiling on the diamond. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound long, lean-limbed freshman darted his way to an event-best 6.65 60 and he topped at 90 mph across the infield, which tied for the event lead. Wilson has all sorts of upside at the plate, driving balls with gap-to-gap feel from a fast, low-effort right-handed swing. He screamed a 100.6 mph missile to left field for his hardest hit ball, barreling his furthest ball 374 feet, which was the fourth highest mark of this event.

+ OF Quest Hull (Effingham, 2023; IL) impressed offensively at this event. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound left-handed hitter showed natural raw power comfortably clearing the right-center wall with a 386 foot home run in BP that was the furthest ball of this entire event. Aside from that swing, Hull mainly utilized the middle of the field, posting the third-highest average exit velocity (92 mph) of the event while also squaring his hardest ball up at 97.2 mph. From the outfield, Hull’s hardest throw home clocked in at 88 mph from a short, fast arm that we’ve seen pitch into the upper-80s on the mound in prior looks.

+ Another freshman to know for the Vikings is INF Braden Hemmer (Columbia Hickman, 2023), who has strength and athleticism attached to a 6-foot, 190-pound frame. Hemmer stayed on the barrel to the pull-side throughout BP, posting an average exit velocity of 90.2 mph while elevating his furthest batted ball 355 feet. He also ran a 7.06 60 and was 90 mph across the infield, which tied for the event lead.

+ Switch-hitting C/1B Wyatt Brockman (Marshfield, 2023) packs plenty of strength onto a broad-shouldered 6-foot, 210-pound frame. Brockman worked gap-to-gap while spraying line drives from both sides of the plate, staying through the baseball from a simple all-around operation. 

+ RHP Cale Willson (Blair Oaks, 2022) toes the rubber at a hulking 6-foot-5, 255-pounds with power stuff to match his physical stature. Willson pumped his fastball at 92-95 mph for strikes, spinning it at 2551 RPM at peak with 18 inches of vertical break to pair. He flashed sharp spin on a downer breaking ball thrown with fastball intent at 72-75 mph that peaked at 2772 RPM, averaging 2687 RPM. He also threw a splitter with minimal spin or lift, metrically, at 81-84 mph that played with natural horizontal action on average (15.5”) and at peak (17.2”). Though still fully harnessing his secondary stuff, Willson’s power fastball and aggressive demeanor on the mound are sure to draw attention throughout the fall.


+ Another high level arm on this Vikings’ pitching staff is RHP Dylan Tate (Eureka, 2022), who provided a highly intriguing look on the mound at Friday’s event. At 6-foot-1, 185-pounds, Tate’s a simple, yet effective, downhill mover that pumped his fastball at 90-92 mph from a fast, athletic high ¾ arm slot. Tate spun his slider with fastball intent at 77-81 mph and it showed tight spin with late break at times, spinning at 2500+ RPM at peak, while showing arm-side feel for a changeup at 82-84 mph. Last spring, Tate punched out 35 batters over 21 innings of work and he’ll look to build off that base in his sophomore year.


Two new faces to the Vikings’ pitching staff that took the mound at this event are RHP Peter Underwood (CBC, 2023) and RHP Coleman Morrison (Springfield Catholic, 2023).

+ Built at a strong 6-foot, 180-pounds, Underwood’s fastball played at 89-91 mph with straight four-seam carry up in the zone at times. His slider showed heavy horizontal action (19.3”) at 78-79 mph, averaging nearly 2500 RPM, and he also threw a firm changeup at 83-85 mph.

+ It’s hard to miss Morrison on the mound, as the Springfield native toes the rubber at a highly physical 6-foot-5, 230-pounds. Morrison’s fastball played at 90-92 mph, spinning two different breaking balls off it; a downer, more traditional 12/6 shaped curveball at 79-82 mph and a harder, cutter-like slider at 84-87 mph. He rounded out his arsenal with a straight changeup at 83-85 mph with low spin (T1543 RPM).
