Missouri Final Four: June 7

Cape Notre Dame and Christian Brother College earned state titles in Class 4 and Class 5, respectively. Here is a recap of the games this weekend. 

Friday, June 5

Class 4
#1 Notre Dame 13, Smithville 3
Chase Urhahn had a big day to lead Notre Dame past Smithville 13-3 and in the Class 4 State Championship game.  Urhahn went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and a double finishing with six RBI.  Christian Job added a five-hit performance and Graham Ruopp went the distance for the Bulldogs.  Ruopp fanned five, walked two and allowed three runs on three hits. James Grandgenett and Alexander Schram each had two hit for Smithville.

Sullivan 7, St. Charles 5
Sullivan led 4-0 after four innings, but St. Charles tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.  Jake Lochner lifted the Eagles past St. Charles, 7-5, with a two-run home run to right field in the top of the eighth.  Matthew Foster earned the win working in relief of Lochner.  Foster with two innings, striking out four and giving up no runs on two hits.  Foster also went 2-for-4 with a run scored, offensively.  Michael Looney went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for St. Charles.  Sullivan led 4-0 after four innings

Class 5
#3 Staley 7, #6 Eureka 5
Staley jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one inning and held on to upend Eureka 7-5, and advance to the Class 5 State Championship Game. Jack Duffy went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Duffy also turned in on the best catches of the season, going up against the fence in right-center to snag a would-be home run and stop an Eureka rally.  Jacob Pfender added two hits, an RBI and scored a run.  Brody Meloy moved to 7-0 on the season working four innings in relief.  He struck out two and held the Wildcats hitless for 4.1 innings.  Eureka rallied for three runs in the second inning behind an RBI double by Cole Stamper, and added two more in the third, when Brett Geisz lead off with a double and later scored on a double by Zach Seiler.

#5 Christian Brothers College 8, Kickapoo 7
Kickapoo jumped out an early 3-1 lead after three innings, but CBC responded with three runs in the third and three more runs in the fifth.  The Cadets held on and lasted through the Chiefs four run rally in the sixth to earn a 8-7 win and an appearance in the Class 5 State Championship.  The also featured a match-up between two to rated pitchers in the state, Matt Vierling and Logan Wiley. Vierling went five innings with six strikeouts, four walks, and three runs on four hits.  Wiley surrendered two earned runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.  Riley Herron headed the comeback in the Chiefs half of the sixth inning with a three-run home run to right, to pull within one of CBC.  Stephen Haring came on in relief and earned the save, working 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and did not allow a hit.  Shane Melbrod was 3-for-4 with a clutch double to right-center in the sixth inning that plated two runs.   Haring and Michael Million also had multi-hit games for CBC. 

Saturday, June 6

Class 4 State Championship; Notre Dame 17, Sullivan 0
Cape Notre Dame scored 17 runs on 14 hits led by Christian Job's 3-for-4 performance.  He hit two doubles and drove in six runs.  Dean Crippen drove in a trio of runs going 2-for-4 with four runs scored.  Adam Pope earned the win striking out three with no walks, allowing no runs on four hits.  Five Bulldog hitters had a multi-hit game. 

Class 4 State Consolation; Smithville 6, St. Charles 1
Jacob Bohlken earned the 6-1 win over St. Charles working six inning on the mound, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk.  Evan Coder went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Kaleb Ried, James Grandgenett and Quintan Reed each collected two hits for the Warriors.  Alex Schram also homered for Smithville. 

Class 5 State Championship; CBC 17, Staley 5
Christian Brothers College pounded 17 hit and scored 17 runs to earn the Class 5 State Championship. Shane Melbrod, Stephen Haring, and Matt Vierling each homered for the Cadets.  Matt Vierling and brother Mark, each went 4-for-5 with a combined six RBI and five runs.  Blake Charlton, who was the starting quarterback for the state champion football team, earned the win.  He worked six innings with six strikeouts, allowing four earned runs on seven hits. 

Class 5 State Consolation; Kickapoo 4, Eureka 2
Kaleb Schmidt tossed a complete game to earn the win for Kickapoo. Schmidt struck out nine, walked two and allowed one earned run on six hits.  Nathan Witherspoon wen the distance for Eureka with six strikeouts, a pair of walks, and gave up one earned run on three hits.  Kickapoo got all of their runs in the first inning when Riley Herron doubled and scored.  Austin DesRoche led Eureka with a 2-for-4 day, Brandon Wamsher went 2-for-3 for Kickapoo.
