Super 60 Player Preview: C Tanner Murphy (Malden HS)

Super 60 Slide 2013

Tanner Murphy has certainly opened a lot of eyes over the past few years with his natural abilities. Murphy stands an athletic 6-foot-1, 205-pounds and possesses tremendous arm strength behind the plate, as he has fired pop times of 1.75, 1.81 and 1.94. At the inagural Midwest Future Games in 2011, Murphy set the Future Games record for fastest pop time, firing a 1.86.

At the plate, Murphy has big power potential. Though still raw, he is extremely strong and has plus bat speed. No doubt Murphy is one of the premier prospects in the Class of 2013 and a high probability of being selected come draft time in June.

While primarily a catcher, Murphy has also impressed with a live arm off the mound and fastball sitting 84-86 mph, topping at 87 mph, with good arm side run. His breaking ball (69-71 mph) has shown hard 12-to-6 break, and was thrown consistently for a strike.

Murphy has maintained the recognition as the top Class of 2013 catcher, and has been a fixture in the top 10 player ranks since we firstsaw him as a sophomore.
