The 2018 high school season is well underway, as teams head into their third week of play. Today, 2019 OF James Beard (Loyd Star HS) was named the Player of the Week for March 5th  – March 11th. This week’s decision was a tough one, as there were several worthy nominees for the honor. We take a look at the other nominations sent in by coaches around the state in this week’s Diamond Notes.

+ 2020 3B Shane Lewis posted seven hits in sixteen at-bats with four doubles, one triple and one home run, while driving in eight and scoring another six.

+ 2019 3B Cameron Shaffer (Yazoo County HS) went three for four with three singles and four RBI.

+ 2020 Chad Stockstill (Picayune HS) went 8-12 with two doubles and two homeruns. 

+ 2020 Devin Daniels (East Marion HS) went 10-16 with a .625 batting average. He recorded four RBI, 15 stolen bases, and scored six times. On the mound Daniels went five innings giving up four runs while striking out seven.

+ 2019 Murray Hutchinson (Madison Central HS) posted seven hits in fourteen at-bats with a double, five RBI’s while scoring five runs. Additionally, Hutchinson stole one base and was walked and hit by a pitch twice.

+ East Central CC commit, 2018 Will Newell (Florence HS) was four for seven at the plate for a .571 batting average with two singles, a double, and a triple.  He also was hit by a pitch once and walked once to help him have a .600 OBP.  Newell tallied six runs scored and six runs batted in his ten plate appearances. On the mound for one inning of relief work, Newell was able to record three strikeouts.

+ 2018 Reece Moore (Ripley HS) went five for nine at the plate with two doubles, two homeruns, seven runs batted in and three walks. Had the go-ahead double Tuesday in the 8th inning vs Corinth also hitting a grand slam on Friday.

+ 2018 Rodricus Watkins (Wayne County HS) was four for four, scored two runs and stole three bases. 

+ 2019 Avery Barnett (Booneville HS) had a .600 batting average with a OPS of 1.267 and two runs batted in. Additionally, Barnett recorded two putouts and two assists from his centerfield position.
