Intriguing 2019's: South District Tryouts

The 2018 State Games of Mississippi will take place June 11-15 on the campus of Meridian CC. Yesterday the south district held their annual tryouts to fill the 18-man roster.  Today we look at a few participants to keep an eye out for in Meridian during tournament play.

Shelby Terrell RHP / West Marion , MS / 2019

11/12/17 Wiry 6-foot-2. 160-pound frame with long limbs and room to add strength. Medium, clean arm stroke into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and normal effort. Upbeat tempo to the delivery with fluid rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction, lands square and finishes athletic. Repeats delivery well commanding fastball at 83-86 mph showing downward angle with occasional sinking action. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape, flashing occasional tight spin with depth at 72-76 mph.

Braydon Coffey C / Parklane academy, MS / 2019

7/11/2017 Thick 5-foot-8, 190-pound frame. Catcher with soft hands receiving, strong wrist, some stiffness in setup, and quick clean transfer. Short arm action, in-line direction on throws to second recording a pop time range of 2.03-2.15 and a positional velocity of 73 mph. Right-handed hitter hitting from tall, open, athletic setup with high hands.  Stiff load, with short stride landing even and behind front side. Left-center field approach, short, slight uphill path and solid bat speed producing an exit velocity of 86 mph. Ran a 7.19 60-yard dash.

Reed Trimble SS / Northwest Rankin, MS / 2019

11/12/17 Average, athletic 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame with room for added strength. Quality athlete posted a 6.79 60-dash. Switch-hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load, short stride, and quality balance throughout the swing. Line-drive, gap-to-gap approach with athletic, fluid rhythm, taking a simple, direct path keeping the barrel on plane through the hitting zone with a line-drive, gap-to-gap approach and a short, compact stroke and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 86 mph. Versatile, athletic defender with average hands, solid footwork, clean exchanges, and played through balls well. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with carry and accuracy on throws that produced a positional velocity of 84 mph.

Julian Murphy C / Murrah, MS / 2019

11/12/17 Medium 5-foot-11, 186-pound frame with room for added strength.  Right-handed hitter that starts from an open, balanced setup, works closed with a leg kick load into short stride landing balanced in a tall hitting position. Left-center field type approach with rotational path and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 85 mph. Defensively, he sits high in the setup with quick, clean exchanges into short high-3/4 arm action. Best pop times ranged from 1.95-2.07 and a positional velocity of 73 mph from the crouch. Ran a 7.44 60-yard dash.
