The Prep Baseball Report Mississippi scouting staff was on the campus of Southern Miss on Tuesday for the first day of the 4th annual Mississippi Elite Underclassmen Showcase. The event played host to 100 athletes from across the state in the 2018 and 2019 classes. Below are several quick notes from yesterday’s event.
RHP Coleton Ausbern (Nettleton HS, MS) was up to 86 mph, sitting 83-85 for two innings of work. An uncommitted 2018, he has a slim frame at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds and pitches from a medium arm action through a high-3/4 slot. His fastball showed arm-side life at times with good finish. Ausbern’s breaking ball was 73-75 mph, flashing solid depth, with swing and miss ability. Ausbern’s performance landed him the class of 2018 MVP of the Mississippi Elite Underclass Showcase.
RHP Jared Johnson (Smithville HS, MS) also had a solid two innings of work and was up to 89 mph, sitting 86-87 with his fastball. The uncommitted 2019, has a thick, projectable frame at 6-foot-2, 190-pounds and pitches with short arm action through a high-3/4 slot. Johnson displayed quality arm strength with regular effort in delivery touching 89 mph with fastball, while sitting 86-87 mph. Breaking ball was 65-67 mph with developing spin and action, but flashed a harder slider with late action at 73 mph. He did struggle with command in this outing but will be an interesting arm to follow. Johnson's performance landed him the class 2019 MVP of the Mississippi Elite Underclass Showcase.
LHH Colin Frederickson (St. Stanislaus HS, MS) an athletic 6-foot, 180-pound catcher/corner infielder showed easy swing with power. Went 2-for-3 on the day but seemed to find barrel every at-bat. Frederickson showed a simple, repeatable, gap-to-gap approach with proportional strength and backspin ability.
RHP Tucker Jones (Pearl HS, MS) had a solid outing as well. The uncommitted 2018 is a slim 5-foot-9, 140-pounder that throws from a ¾ slot with an easy arm action. Jones displayed willingness to compete, challenging hitters with 78-81 mph fastball with good arm side run and sinking action. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape with developing spin, solid depth and command at 65-67 mph.
