Pitching Analysis - Class of 2019 South

The Class of 2019 South event took place on Tuesday, June 5th, at Southwest Community College, in Summit, MS. The open event saw prospects from across the state of Mississippi perform in front of several college coaches, and the Prep Baseball Report Mississippi scouting staff.

Today, the Prep Baseball Report Mississippi scouting staff takes a deeper look at the pitching performances from the June event.

+ Rusty Atkinson, LHP, Leake Academy, 2019
Lean, athletic 6-foot, 170-pound frame. Left-handed hitter with athletic and open stance. Left-handed pitcher who hides the ball well in his delivery, has a short quick arm action.  Has a fluid motion with solid balance and rhythm throughout the leg lift. Threw his fastball 74-76 mph, topping at 78 mph and commanded it around the zone.  Flashed a  breaking ball at 67-68 with shape and early break along with a fading change up thrown with near fastball arm speed at 68-70 mph.

+ Jeffrey Diamond, RHP, Presbyterian Christian, 2019
Athletic 5-foot-11, 170-pounds with wiry build and room to add strength. A right-handed pitcher, Diamond shows a short, clean arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Delivery is athletic with solid direction and fluid rhythm. Pitched 80-82 mph with fastball showing solid fill for the zone and occasional life. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape with solid spin at 69-70 mph also flashed a changeup that displayed fading action.

+ Zach Flaskamp, RHP, Southeast Lauderdale, 2019
Medium build 6-foot-4, 175-pound frame with room for projection. Right-handed pitcher working from a short, loose arm stroke and an over-the-top release working with downward angle in the zone. Smooth rhythm and relative ease in his delivery, good direction and lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 79-81 mph, also showing feel for 11/5 shaped breaking ball at 66-67 mph, and his changeup was 72-75 with fastball-like arm speed.  Flashed a slider with developing shape at 65-66 mph.

+ Dawson Lawler, RHP, Purvis, 2019
Long-limb 6-foot, 150-pound frame with room for added strength. Right-handed pitcher throwing from a short, high-¾ arm stroke with up-tempo rhythm and effort in delivery. Works down mound with level shoulders and solid use of front side, finishing athletically and slightly off to the first base side. Fastball sat 75-76 mph and was scattered around the zone. Breaking ball showed early 11/5 shape at 64-65 mph while change up had slight fading action at 66-69 mph. Also flashed a 63-64 mph slider.

+ Cody McDoniel, RHP, George County, 2019
Medium build 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame with room to fill. Right-handed pitcher has a clean arm swing from a high slot. Easy tempo in a repeatable delivery with hip turn at the top of his balance point and short stride down the mound. Throws a straight fastball at 75-78 mph. His curveball flashes depth with 11/5 shape at 62-67 mph. Throws his changeup with arm side fade at 67-68 mph.

+ Landon Rawson, RHP, Central Holmes Christan, 2019
Athletic, wiry 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame with room to add strength. Short, loose arm action into 3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Delivery shows deception and athleticism with fluid rhythm working into a lowered arm slot. Displayed fill for the zone with multiple pitches, throwing fastball that had solid arm side life at 81-83 mph and a slider that had sweeping, lateral action at 73-75 mph. Change up was thrown with fastball arm speed flashing slight fading action at 75-76 mph.
