Mississippi Senior Games: Quick Hits

Matt Miller
State Director

CLINTON, MS - The Mississippi Senior Games was held on Sunday, September 29th at Clinton High School in Clinton, MS. This event was an open event that consisted of some of the top uncommitted prospects from the 2025 class across the state. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw during game play and were able to get numbers and metrics via TrackMan. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing at the event.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look at some of the standouts from the Mississippi Senior Games. Below, you can find scout notes and video on some of the standouts from the event.

QUICK HITS

Christian Newson / INF / Desoto Central / 2025

Athletic infielder with tools that could transfer to the next level. Newson started the day with an event best 6.61 60 and didn’t stop there. Later the 5-11, 150 pounder stepped in the box and rattled off several line drives during his batting practice round using an all fields approach with exit velocities up to 94 mph. On defense, the Desoto Central product showed good range with accuracy on throws and velocities up to 80 mph across the diamond. A solid spring for the Jaguars could give Newson the opportunity he’s looking for at the next level.

Elijah Johnson / INF / Acellus HS / 2025

The 5-9, 160 pound Johnson has shown steady progression each time we see him. On Sunday at Clinton High School the uncommitted senior took another step in proving his ability in efforts to attract college recruiters. Johnson kicked off his day with a solid 6.7 60 and continued to impress throughout the event. At the plate he had a fairly level bat path with quick hands and middle to pull side approach, and exit velocities up to 95 mph. Johnson’s arm has gotten stronger as well with accuracy and velocities up to 85 mph.

Tyler Martin / INF / Brandon / 2025

The recent transfer from Alabama showed out a little on Sunday with big numbers at the plate during his batting practice round. The right handed hitting infielder had multiple mid to upper 90’s exit velocities using a middle to pull side, line drive approach with occasional loft. On defense, Martin looks to be a dependable glove with solid arm, up to 85 mph, and accuracy. His size may move him permanently to a corner infield position with a middle of the order bat. He could be a big addition to last years state champions, the Brandon Bulldogs.

Ty Blakeney / LHP / Taylorsville / 2025

Anyone looking for lefty with some deception needs to head to Taylorsville. The 6-2, 170 pound Blakeney worked his fastball into the low 80 mph range and hides the ball fairly well as It rides up his backside making it difficult for hitters to pick up. There are some things he could clean up in his delivery but there is plenty there to work with. The frame also say more is in the tank concerning velocity. He secondary stuff looks solid though the curveball stands out with 11/5 shape and decent bite. A big arm in the Tartars plans to return to Trustmark!

Wilkes Johnson / RHP / Madison Ridgeland Academy / 2025

It’s hard to believe this arm is still available but he is though after this past weekend he should have a few more options. Johnson worked his fastball to both sides of the plate while sitting sitting in the 86-87 mph with an event high 88.4. The Madison Ridgeland Academy hurler also had good feel just of the plate with his 12/6 curveball in the 74-79 mph range. The sturdy framed (6-2, 195lbs) should be a work horse for the Patriots as they move into the 2025 spring season.

John Griffin Lane / RHP / Magnolia Heights / 2025

Lane has the frame to dream on. At 6-4, 180lbs and wiry, one can only imagine what’s on the way. On Sunday he showed life to his fastball that worked up to 88 mph while sitting primarily in the 84-86 mph range. The Magnolia Heights righty uses a 3 pitch mix that includes a sharp breaker nearing 2700 spin and depth along with a mimicking change up (1497 spin). As the command of all 3 pitches continues to develop this arm could be a big time pick up for whichever school Lane ends up at.

Maximus Bates / RHP / Vancleave / 2025

Bates stepped on the mound and his first warmup offering was from sidearm slot with fluid action and control of the delivery. His next pitch was from an over the top slot with the same fluidity and body control. The lean and wiry Bates (6-1, 150lbs) still can improve mechanically but the stuff is very intriguing. The Vancleave product can work his fastball into the low 80’s and dips lower in velocity as the slot drops though the action gets better as the slot drops as well. He shows decent feel of his secondary stuff which includes a slider and change up from both slots. There is definitely a place for this arm at the next level.

Noah Canten / Catcher / Alcorn Central / 2025

We remember Noah well from the week he had at the Battle at the Beach last year going 8 for 10 on the week. This was our first time to get a look at the tools the Alcorn Central receiver brings to the park and we were pretty impressed. Canten moves well behind the plate showing good footwork and a frame (5-11, 170lbs) that can continue to add strength. He turned in an event best 1.97 pop time with arm velocity behind the plate up to 77 mph. During his batting practice round Canten sprayed the baseball to all fields using a line drive approach with exit velocities up to 93 mph. He’s definitely a prospect recruiters will want to get another look at!
