4A Round 2: NW Guilford at Hough

Brandon Hall
Mid-Atlantic Executive Director

Northwest Guilford – 11                             Hough – 9

One big inning took down, previously undefeated Hough.  Northwest Guilford used two key doubles and 3 infield errors to plate 9 runs in the 3rd, taking a commanding 9-1 lead.  Hough would give themselves a chance to get back into the game late, but the Vikings closed the door on the Hough season.

Hough jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning when Cal Reihl (2021, LHP/1B, Wingate commit) doubled home Luke Osteen (2021, RHP/OF, Gardner Webb commit).  Osteen, the starting pitcher for Hough, battled some command issues in the first two innings but made big pitches when needed to keep the Vikings off the board.

In the 3rd, Andrew Franz (2022, INF) led off for Northwest Guilford, doubling to right.  An infield error moved runners to 1st and 3rd, where Osteen made a big pitch, getting a ground ball that would see the 1st out cut down at the plate.  With runners remaining on 1st and 3rd, a ground ball to 3rd was going to score a run, trading it for the 2nd out, but the ball was thrown away, tying the game and keeping runners on the corner.  A walk was followed by a double from Ryne Rodriguez (2022, INF), scoring two.

After a couple of seeing-eye singles and another Hough error, Franz singled through the right side, scoring Tanner Brewer (2024, OF) and making it 6-1 Vikings.  A double from Carter Bristol (2023, OF, ECU commit) was followed by a Jackson Godfrey (3B, 2024) single, pushing the lead to 9-1.

Vikings starter, Sylas Boris worked 4 innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and striking out 2.  He labored at times through a deep Hough lineup, but made big pitches, limiting damage and keeping Northwest in the lead.  The Vikings would add two insurance runs in the 5th, pushing the lead back to 11-3.

In the 5th and 6th, Hough continued to compete, scoring two in each inning.  Heading to their final at-bat in the 7th the Huskies trialed 11-7.  A walk, hit-by-pitch, and walk loaded the bases with 0 outs.  Vikings reliever Bryan Webb (2022 RHP) induced a pop up for the 1st out, stranding the three runners.  However, both Tad Hudson (2023, 3B) and Jackson Wolf (2022, 2B) worked competitive walks, pushing the tying run to 2B with a score of 11-9.

The final of 6 Viking arms, Hunter Wujcik (2021 RHP) entered the game.  The big righty started Andrew Schuldt (2021, C, Campbell commit) with a slider before inducing a game ending 4-6-3 double play on an 86 mph fastball, located away from the right handed hitter.

Northwest Guilford advances to the 3rd round of the 4A State Playoffs where they will travel to Providence HS on Saturday night.
