Charlotte MegaStar Scout Day: Middle Infielders

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
North Carolina Director of Scouting & PBR Assoc Scout

On Wednesday May 30th the Charlotte MegaStars held a Scout Day with Prep Baseball Report of North Carolina.  The Scout Day allowed the players from the MegaStars program to run through a full pro-style workout with players collecting verified stats from our independent service.  PBR Scouts were on hand to evaluate each prospect and players had the choice to add the evaluation and a video to their personal PBR profiles.

The updated statistics, evaluation, and video allow for a full PBR profile that can be shared with over 900 college coaches and Universities that subscribe to PBR.  With college and pro evaluators on hand, several players stood out, and have developed over the past few months.

The Middle Infield group features 7 players, two of which also worked out on the mound.  Athleticism and strength exist in the group.  Andrew Alejandro (2B, 2020) turned in a 6.77 sixty on the laser timer.  Jake England (SS, 2019), Julio Moreno (2B, 2019), and Kyle Raynor (SS, 2020) each had their exit velocity peak at 85 mph off the barrel.

Middle Infielder Analysis

Andrew Alejandro SS / OF / Westminster Catawba Christian School , SC / 2019

5 feet 10, 148-pound athletic build. Athletic with quickness present, ran a 6.77 sixty.  Offensively he works from the right side with an athletic, balanced setup. Gets his weight back in his load and uses a short stride getting his lower half through the ball. His barrel works level through the zone getting extension out front. Shows feel for his barrel with good hands using a more pull type approach. Above average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 87 mph. On the infield, possess quick feet with average hands playing through the ball. Clean exchanges with a longer arm action working to a high ¾ slot. Positional velocity of 78 with average carry.  Accurate arm across the diamond and should improve with more looseness.

Jake England SS / RHP / Forestview, NC / 2019

6 feet 3, 175-pound lanky build. Hits from the right side with a wide but balanced setup and short stride getting his lower half through the ball. His barrel works short to the ball, staying level through the zone and getting extension out front. Looks to stay gap to gap with a line drive approach. Shows feel for his barrel with his exit velocity recorded at 85 mph and should improve with added strength. On the infield he shows average hands, funneling to the center of his body with clean exchanges. Plyable hips, but tends to stay high through the catch.  Short arm action and throwing from a high ¾ slot with accurate throws across the diamond. Arm should play better as his feet are more active playing through the ball with more rhythm. We have seen him carry 79 across the diamond but he looked to be guarded with his throws on this day, lacking some hand speed and extension. Ran a 7.64 sixty.

Julio Moreno 2B / OF / Home School, SC / 2019

5 feet 7, 200-pound build. Hits from the right side with a simple swing using a tall, balanced setup and short stride in his load. Shows a more pull type approach with is bat working uphill after contact. Looks to get extension out front, but his swing does get long at times. Exit velocity recorded at 85 mph and that should improve as he learns to get his lower half more involved in his swing. On the infield he shows average hands with clean exchanges and a short arm action leading to a high ¾ slot. Peaked at 65 mph across the diamond.  Accurate arm across the diamond that should play better as he looks to play through the ball more. Ran a 7.66 sixty.

Kyle Raynor SS / RHP / Indian Land , SC / 2020

Average, athletic frame at 5 feet 11, 170-pound build. Hits from the right side with a balanced setup. Gets his weight going back in his load and uses a short stride. Looks to stay in the middle of the field with a line drive approach and his barrel working short to the ball, staying in the zone and getting extension out front. Stays simple throughout his swing good balance and his exit velocity recorded at 85 mph. On the infield he shows average hands, funneling to the center of his body after catch with clean exchanges and a longer arm action. Average carry at 75 mph from the position.  Accurate arm across the diamond with the ability to throw from different slots. Good burst off the line and added strength should lead to improving the 7.49 sixty.
On the mound, shows feel for three pitches, occasionally changing from a high-¾ slot to a low-¾ slot to create run or work a slider.  Long arm action plunges but is not violent. Average to above hand speed working with smooth rhythm and staying level through his shoulders.  Fastball ranged 75-77 from the higher slot, dipping to 74-75 when working to create run. Soft, downer curveball at 63-65 with gradual action.  Slider sits 67-68 working to sweep but inconsistent. Change-up may be 2nd pitch right now at 69-71 with near fastball hand speed and arm side run.

Ryan Street SS / RHP / Jesse C Carson , NC / 2020

5 feet 8, 155-pound build. Offensively he works from the right side with a slightly open stance, using a toe tap for his load. Gets his lower half through ball with his barrel working short to the ball, staying level through the zone and getting extension out front. Shows feel for the barrel working to stay gap to gap with a line drive approach. Exit velocity recorded at 79 mph and should improve with added strength. On the infield he shows average hands with fluid feet and funneling to the center of his body after catch. Clean exchanges, with a short arm action and accurate arm across the diamond with the ability to throw from different slots.  Arm peaked at 78 across the field with average carry. Quickness may increase with strength and maturity seeing a 7.77 sixty improve.

Clint Turner SS / RHP / Kings Mountain, NC / 2021

6 feet, 145-pound lanky, athletic, projectable build. Hits from the right side with an athletic, balanced setup using a leg kick for his load and getting his lower half through the ball. His bat works short to the ball, staying level through the zone, and getting good extension out front. Shows a line drive approach looking to drive the ball in the gaps. Looseness in his swing with good balance. Exit velocity recorded at 73 mph and should improve as he matures and adds strength. Soft hands on the infield with quick, fluid feet athletically playing through the ball. Transfers to the center of his body after catch with clean exchanges and long arm action leading to an over the top slot. Accurate arm across the diamond with carry to his throws measuring 80 mph out of the hand.  Ran a 7.40 sixty that should improve with increased strength allowing him to carry his top end speed longer.
On the mound, Turner is around the zone with 3 pitches.  Over-the-top slot and a long, loose arm swing. Average to above quickness in the release.  Regular effort, working level throughout, landing slightly across his line with the toe closed at foot strike.  Fastball ranged 77-80 with slight run. Breaking ball and change-up are both use-able. Fights for his line on the breaking ball creating a gradual, soft tilt at 62-64.  When landing on-line with it, the velocity jumped to 68-69 and he 12/6 tilt was later and sharper. Change-up works from a slower arm speed, ranging 66-69 with arm side run.  Projection exists as strength and maturity are added to the frame.

Brandon Winrow SS / 2B / Jack Britt , NC / 2020

6 feet, 170-pound average, athletic build. Hits from the left side with an open setup using a toe tap for his load and getting his lower half through the ball. Level path that gets long a times but does get good extension out front. Looks to stay gap to gap with his approach showing feel for his barrel.  Exit velocity recorded at 79 mph. On the infield he plays through the ball with fluid feet and average hands. Shows clean exchanges with a short arm action and the ability to throw from different slots across the diamond. 77 mph across the infield from SS, with average carry. Decent athlete should improve his 60 time with maturity, running a 7.49 on the laser.
