Charlotte MegaStar Scout Day: Pitcher Analysis

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

PBR was at Olympic High School in Charlotte to run a scout day for the Charlotte MegaStars.  During the event, players were run through a full pro-style workout, including a laser timed 60, defensive work at their primary position, cage time, producing an exit velocity, and live BP on the field.

PBR scouts, as well as several college coaches, were on hand to collect the information and begin to put evaluations on the players present.  Select players will also receive a professionally edited video to their PBR Profile page.

Today we break down the pitcher only's from the event.  Each arm threw a controlled bullpen for the PBR scouts and college coaches in attendance.  Full evaluations include their stats from the day.  Select players received a PBR video from the workout as well, and those can be seen by clicking on the player's name to get to their PBR Profile Page.

Charlotte MegaStar Scout Day: Pitcher Analysis

Jack Fairley LHP / Providence, NC / 2020

Projection is left in the 6-foot, 180 pound frame.  Long arm swing and better than average hand speed through release.  Fastball has run when thrown to the arm side at 79-81.  Attacked the zone with fastball, showing feel for both sides of the plate.  High leg kick, working to a slightly tucked position at balance.  Choppy rhythm, finding a consistent release point for all pitches as the bullpen wore on.  Works level and on-line, landing square.  Some effort to find the release in a high-3/4 slot.  Breaking ball works with near fastball hand speed and 1/7 tilt at 69.  Change-up has run and occasional fade at 71-73, with deception in the arm speed.  Movement, feel for the zone, and projection in the body should allow him to continue to progress in the coming months.

Chase Drinkard RHP / 1B / Jesse C Carson, NC / 2020

5-foot-10, 200 pounds.  Strike thrower with a 4-pitch mix.  Works level and on-line through the delivery with some rhythm.  Lands square.  Some effort through release, working for extension.  Long arm swing gets to a high-3/4 slot.  Fastball ranged 76-78, playing straight, pounding the zone throughout the bullpen session.  Straight change-up is thrown with solid hand speed, attacking the zone at 68-74.  Hand occasionally works around the outside of the change-up, causing come cutting action.  Curveball uses gradual 11/5 tilt, with a short break, at 68-69.  Flashed a couple of sliders with more sweeping action at 73.

Riley Dunlap RHP / 3B / East Gaston , NC / 2022

Thin, 6-foot, 145 pound frame.  Coils at balance, staying level, landing on-line and square.  Long arm action, with a slight stab at the bottom of the arc, working to an over-the-top slot.  Fastball sat 71-73.  Good feel for a change-up, thrown with solid hand speed at 67-68.  Breaking ball uses gradual 11/5 tilt, rolling through the zone at 59-65.  The harder breaking balls had later, hard break.  Attacked the zone with 3 pitches, showing some feel for command to zones.

Logan Harris RHP / OF / Olympic , NC / 2020

Lanky, 6-foot-2, 175 pound frame.  Good feel for the fastball and breaking ball.  Change-up has a chance to be a weapon, but lacks consistent feel for the pitch.  Stretch only.  Average kick.  Fights for consistent rhythm, working level and in-line, land square.  Slight pelvic tilt out of balance, shifting the head behind the hips.  Long arm swing to an exaggerated over-the-top slot.  Average arm speed.  Fastball sat 76-77.  Change-up has hard sink at 73, thrown with deception in the arm speed.  Breaking ball has gradual 11/5 tilt at 65-68.  Showed feel for both sides of the plate with the fastball and breaking ball.

Daniel Jones RHP / OF / Carmel Christian, NC / 2021

6-foot, 160 pounds.  Athletic through his hips, is able to create action on the baseball with the fastball.  Attacked the zone at 77-80, creating sink to the arm side and occasional run to the glove side.  Good rhythm through the delivery, works level, landing across his line and square with the foot.  Slight coil and crunch at balance, working to load and lead with the hips.  Loose arm has quickness getting to a high-3/4 slot.  Changeup comes out of a slightly higher slot than the fastball at 70-72 with solid hand speed.  Breaking ball comes out of the slightly higher slot as well, with gradual 11/5 movement at 68-69.  Arm speed and athleticism allow room for projection as he continues to mature the frame.
