Cuthbertson Takes Game 1 of Big Series

Cuthbertson – 4                              Weddington – 0

PBR was at Weddington on Tuesday night for the first game of the year for both Weddington and Cuthbertson.  Each club comes into the season with high expectations and talent on their roster.  The Tuesday night matchup was the first of a two game series to be played this week.  Game two will be at Cuthbertson on Friday at 6:30pm, the first under the lights at Cuthbertson.

Both Justin Rivera (RHP, 2021) for Weddington and Ethan Wilson (RHP, 2021, Belmont Abbey commit) showed some nerves in their first innings on the mound.  Rivera walked the leadoff hitter and fell behind Connor Higgins (OF/LHP, 2021, UNCW Commit) before he singled to left.  Rivera would retire the next three hitters.  In the bottom half Wilson walked the first two hitters and then induced to pop ups.  He walked a third hitter to load the bases but escaped with another pop up.

Each arm would settle in with Cuthbertson striking first in the 3rd.  A two out single, with two on, by Landon Carr (MIF, 2022) , scored Enzo McIntyre.  The Cavs would add a second run in the 5th with two outs and a runner on 2B, Carr popped up in the infield.  A deep blue sky was darkening, and the ball did get above the lights creating an issue and eventually falling.  Credit Higgins for scoring from 2B on the error, giving the Cavs a 2-0 lead.  Cuthbertson would add single runs in the 6th and 7th to pad the lead.

Wilson worked into the 6th, striking out 5 and only giving up 1 hit.  His command fluctuated at times, walking 4, but he threw enough strikes to get out of trouble, and when he was stressed, he seemed to make several big pitches to end innings.

With two outs and two on in the 6th, the Cavs turned to freshman Tristan Potts (LHP, 2024) who attacked with his fastball movement to get a big strikeout to end the frame.  He added two more in the 7th to gather the save in the win.
