Elite South Scout Day: Quick Hitters- Pitchers

Matt Payne
Director of Scouting, PBR of NC

On Sunday May 23rd PBR of NC was on hand at Lenoir CC to host a scout day with Elite South Baseball. The scout day also featured some players not part of the organization who participated in the workout. The event featured 24 players in total with grad years ranging from 2022-2026.

The day started with catchers going through their defensive evaluation. Pitchers then threw a controlled bullpen with Trackman gathering ball flight data. After the bullpens the position players participated in a pro-style workout starting with a laser timed 60, followed by live BP with Trackman recording ball flight information and the day finished with infielders and outfielders getting a defensive evaluation.

Below we take a look at some of the pitchers who stood out on the day.

QUICK HITTERS - Pitchers

CW Bayer, 3B/RHP, 2023

Arm has quickness from a high ¾ slot with his fastball topping at 86 mph. Fastball averaged 13.6 inches of horizontal movement with 1:30 tilt. Mixed in some sharp breaking balls late in his pen with a max spin rate of 2820 rpms. Flashed a changeup with run to his arm side.

Preston Jensen, RHP/OF, 2022

Lanky frame with room for growth ahead at 5-foot-10, 132-pounds. Worked in the zone with his fastball that topped at 80 mph. Has feel for his breaking ball with 11/5 shape landing it for strikes and expanding the bottom of the zone. Arm has some quickness and could see his stuff tick up as his body matures.

Jason Caccavaro, SS/RHP, 2023

His 5-foot-10, 130-pound frame has room to add strength in the coming years. Threw a ton of strikes during his pen with feel for three pitches. Fastball peaked at 78 mph while averaging 18.3 inches of horizontal movement. Curveball has 10/4 action in the 62-65 mph range. Located his changeup to the bottom of the zone with run and sinking action.

Landon Smith, RHP/OF, 2023

Clean arm action with feel for locating his fastball to his glove side. Fastball has run to his arm side topping at 73 mph. Changeup is his best secondary pitch with fade and sink. Flashed a cutter with a small across break locating it to his glove side. 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame has plenty of room to add strength.

Michael Woodard, LHP/1B, 2026

Long, lanky frame at 6-foot-2, 165-pounds. Long arm action using a high ¾ slow with his fastball peaking at 72 mph. Breaking ball has across break working to his glove side. Could see his stuff jump as he learns to control his young frame that has plenty of room for maturation in the coming years.

Tyler DeLuzio, LHP/OF, 2022

Slower tempo to his delivery with some deception and a long arm action with an over the top slot. Fastball worked mostly to his arm side at 75-77 mph with 11:00 tilt. Has feel for his changeup with fading action locating it to his arm side.
