NC PBR ProCase Roster Spotlight: Catchers

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

Sunday February 10th will feature the 2nd annual PBR ProCase in North Carolina at the Diamond Xtreme facility in Kernersville, NC.  The invite only event will feature approximately 30 players from North Carolina going through a pro-style workout in front of MLB scouts and professional evaluators.

As we prepare for the ProCase we are going to feature the players that will be in attendance.  Today we are highlighting the corner infielders.  Four corner infielders will workout, including three first-basemen.  This group will produce some power numbers and they are already on the watch list for most MLB organizations.

Scouting Report

Powerful athlete has quickness and an explosiveness in his body.  Still rounding out his game, the athleticism plays behind the dish and the arm has plenty of carry.  Offensively, the switch hitter has developing strength that should translate to a lot of extra base hits in the years to come.  Below is an evaluation from Septembers Border Battle and video from August of 2017.

09.25.18
UNC Greensboro commit.  Mature frame with broad shoulders at 5-foot-10, 190 pounds.  Ball carries out of the hand.  Continues to work on his exchange and footwork through the bag.  2.05 – 2.16 pop times in workout.  Threw accurately in game at 2.11 - 2.22.  Short arm action and quick release with extension.  When the exchange is clean across his chest, throws are accurate through the bag.  Has athleticism in the crouch working to block.  Hands work, receiving several top end arms with some ease.  Switch hitter has the ability to drive the baseball from both sides.  Aggressive approach, working to get to a fastball early.  Found several barrels in game play.  Above average barrel awareness and bat speed from both sides in BP.  Ran a 7.75 sixty.

Scouting Report

Lanky athlete shows power at the plate from the left side.  Strong arm has carry.  Gardner Webb commit will be exciting to watch as he continues to fill out his frame.  Below is our latest evaluation from the PBR Top Prospect Games in August, along with video from that event.

08.07.18
Athletic frame with length in the limbs at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.  Strength and quickness are present with a potential high ceiling. Exit velocity of 90 mph off the barrel.  Left handed hitter is tall and balanced. Loose with feel for the barrel and quickness. Ball jumps off the barrel.  Toe tap load and average stride length. Works for extension and has a slight pull tendency. Some stiffness in his setup behind the plate.  Average hands received arms well at the showcase. Aggressive demeanor and feet on throws working to gain ground. Above average carry with a positional velocity of 78 mph out of the crouch.  Pop times ranged 2.00-2.08 in the workout with accuracy to the bag. Athletic behind the dish controlling block and recovers as well as bunts. Ran a 7.45 sixty.

Joey Rezek C / OF / Northwest Guilford, NC / 2020

One of the more advanced hitters in the 2020 class, Rezek has the ability to find the barrel against pitchers of all levels.  A compact left-handed swing tends to stay in the middle of the field with gap power.  Behind the dish, it is an average arm with accuracy.  PBR scouts also recorded a 6.80 sixty time this past summer at the State Games of NC.
