NC PBR ProCase Roster Spotlight: Corner Infielders

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

Sunday February 10th will feature the 2nd annual PBR ProCase in North Carolina at the Diamond Xtreme facility in Kernersville, NC.  The invite only event will feature approximately 30 players from North Carolina going through a pro-style workout in front of MLB scouts and professional evaluators.

As we prepare for the ProCase we are going to feature the players that will be in attendance.  Today we are highlighting the corner infielders.  Four corner infielders will workout, including three first-basemen.  This group will produce some power numbers and they are already on the watch list for most MLB organizations.

North Carolina PBR ProCase – Corner Infielder Spotlight

Scouting Report

UNC Wilmington commit has made big strides in the past few years.  The bat has a chance to play at a high level and for a player with a big frame, Evans moves well.  Below are evaluations from the Pro5 Academy scout day in September and the PBR Top Prospect Games in August.

09.25.18

UNC Wilmington commit.  Physical presence with athleticism and strength in a 6-foot-2, 215 pound frame.  7.26 sixty time.  4.61 home to first.  Advanced power with average to slightly above bat speed displayed at times in BP.  Barrel awareness can improve.  Some swing and miss present in game situations from a patient approach.  Good hands and active feet.  Rhythm on defense.  Accurate arm with average carry.

08.07.18
Physically imposing 6-foot-2, 215 pound frame.  Moves well for his size and the strength translates to several parts of his game.  Ran a 7.23 sixty. Explosive strength from the right side with an exit velocity of 99 mph off the barrel.  Balanced and athletic the bat head remains flat through the launch position. Short stride with good head discipline.  Works for extension with an ability to drive the baseball to all fields. Defensively confident with good rhythm between his feet and hands.  Balanced setup at the catch with the left foot slightly dropped and the hands working off the inside left hip. Transitions to the belt with a funnel.  Clean exchanges. Medium arm swing with easy carry from an over-the-top slot. Positional velocity peaked at 79 mph across the diamond. Will manipulate the release slightly when on the move, maintaining accuracy.

Scouting Report

Big and athletic, Neal made his presence felt at the 2018 PBR Future Games in August.  After his first semester, Neal re-classed back to the 2019 class, committing to Walters St CC and making himself available in the 2019 MLB Draft.  Below is the evaluation and video from the Future Games.

09.05.16
A monster that flashes athleticism and feel.  Working from a tall stance, with high hands, loads slightly down and in.  Wants to work slightly up hill through the baseball with looseness.  Future power is projectable, but the front side is leaving him at times right now.  Quickness is present, but strength plays ahead of quickness now.  Exit velocity topped at 92mph.  From the outfield, the arm is a little stiff working from slots that range low-3/4 to high-3/4, with a bit of a slingers action.  Lacked accuracy, while topping at 71mph.  Ran his sixty in 7.91 on a soft surface.

Will Butcher 1B / C / TC Roberson, NC / 2019

From an evaluation this past September:

09.25.18
NC State commit.  Large frame with decent feet for his size, listed at 6-foot-1, 230 pounds.  Right handed hitter has whip and looseness producing high exit speeds off the barrel.  Geared to lift, there is power present.  Utilizes a leg kick while the hands load down working to his launch.  Tends to work for extension with a heavy pull emphasis in BP but spread the ball more evenly in games.  Some swing and miss present, especially on balls elevated with above average velocity.  Nimble for his size at 1B.  Footwork can get long, but is athletic through the exchange with a short arm action to a high-3/4 release and above average accuracy on a multitude of throws.  Ran a 8.09 sixty.

Britt fuller 1B / OF / Charlotte Latin, NC / 2019

6-foot-3, 215 pound Duke commit creates leverage from the left side.  The power potential is real as the ball jumps off the bat.
