Next level Baseball / Queen City Open Scout Day: Pitcher Analysis

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
North Carolina Director of Scouting & PBR Assoc Scout

On Saturday August 11th the players in the Next Level Baseball program gathered at Victory Christian School in Charlotte to take part in a PBR Scout Day.  Originally scheduled for August 4th, the event was moved due to inclement weather.  During the event 15 players from the Next Level program, based in Charlotte, took part.

Along with the Next Level Scout Day, PBR held an open event allowing players from outside the Next Level organization to take part in the workout.  Players went through a full pro-style workout including running a laser timed 60 yard dash, defensive workouts with a radar gun reading arm strength, exit velocity testing off the bat and evaluations during live BP.  The pitchers attending the event threw a controlled bullpen allowing PBR Scouts to get a feel for stuff, command, and pitch-ability.

Each player in attendance received a full PBR Profile with updated and verified stats, an evaluation, and video.  The stats and video have been loaded to the profiles and the evaluations will begin to roll out in the coming days.  Today we take a look at the pitchers in attendance, with several working out at a position as well.  Many of the Next Level players showed a willingness to play multiple positions with frames that are still maturing.

PBR Scout Day: By the Numbers:
+ 16 total players took part in the workout
+ 4 players ran under 7.30... 1 ran under 7.00... Median 60 time of 7.54
+ 85 mph was the top recorded exit velocity with a median exit velocity of 74 mph
+ 6 players worked out in the outfield with 10, some doubling up, worked out on the infield
+ 6 pitchers threw controlled bullpens with an uncommitted 2019 working up to 83.

Pitcher Analysis

Jared King LHP / 1B / East Mecklenburg , NC / 2019

6 feet 2, 195-pound build.  Some strength present.  Left handed pitcher who worked only from the stretch.  Creates deception, working slightly across his body to the plate, with a high lead arm.  Arm works with a long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Works in the zone with his fastball at 75-78 mph.  Fastball has arm side run at times.  Flashes a straight changeup with near fastball arm speed at 71-72 mph.  Curveball has 1/7 break at 65-70 mph.  Curveball lacks depth at times. Shows the ability to throw both secondary pitches for strikes.  Has upside as a big body left handed arm with deception in his delivery.

Christopher Hayward RHP / OF / Queens Grant, NC / 2019

5 feet 11, 140-pound athletic build.  Thin,  there is plenty of room to continue to add strength.  Right handed arm still ramping up from an arm issue in his past.  Completely healthy now.  Clean, fluid delivery with a smooth tempo working in line to the plate.   Arm works with a long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Pounds the zone with his fastball at 82-83 mph and 81 mph from the stretch.  Good hand speed and extension.  Working off his fastball primarily, he did throw a knuckleball as his secondary offering.  Some tumbling action at 59-60.  Throws it with decent hand speed and flashed some feel for the zone, lacking command of the glove.

John Moore RHP / 3B / North Mecklenburg, NC / 2019

5 feet 11, 170-pound build.  Fluid delivery on the mound with regular effort.  Medium arm stroke, throwing from an over the top slot.  Fastball in the zone at 73-74 mph, topping at 75 mph.  Near fastball arm speed with his curveball at 59-61 mph.  Curveball has 12/6 break.  Changeup has fade at 68 mph.  Works around the plate with both secondary pitches.
Hits from the right side with a balanced setup.  Works back during his load with a short stride.  Gets his lower half through the ball, looking to get extension with his barrel.  Pull approach with his barrel getting out of the zone to quickly at times.  Exit velocity recorded at 71 mph.  Plays through balls on the infield with average hands, funneling to his midsection after catch.  Clean exchanges with a long arm action, throwing from different slots.  Accurate arm that peaked at 68 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 7.7 in the 60-yard dash.
