North Carolina Prospect ID: Corner Infielder Analysis

Matt Payne
Associate Scout, PBR North Carolina

PBR opened its summer evaluations with an open prospect event at the beautiful Ultimate Performance complex in Matthews, NC on Thursday May 23rd.  Close to 40 players took part in the open pro-style workout with PBR scouts on hand to evaluate players and record their stats while going through the workout.

The event featured players as part of the open North Carolina Prospect ID and the PBR Scout Day with Ultimate Performance.  Today we break down the corner infielders that attended the workout.

NC Prospect ID: Corner Infielder Analysis

Each infielder went through a full workout, being evaluated both offensively and defensively.  In the facility they were able to work through batted ground balls, throwing across an infield for our scouts.  Offensively, an exit velocity was measured off the tee and a live BP session was evaluated.

Brenham Daniell 3B / SS / Covenant Day, NC / 2020

6 foot 4, 180-pound lanky, athletic build.  Hits from the right side using a balanced setup.  Uses a toe tap during his load with his weight and hands working back.  Some looseness to the hands with a slightly uphill path through the ball.  Quick hands with some bat whip through the zone.  Bat path can be inconsistent at times but looks to drive the ball gap to gap.  Exit velocity recorded at 88 mph.  Plays athletically on the infield with looseness to the body.  Fluid feet with average hands funneling to the belt after catch.  Clean exchanges with a shorter arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Arm topped at 77 mph to first base.  Recorded a 3.99 in the 30-yard dash.

Cooper Hyatt 1B / 3B / Weddington, NC / 2023

6 foot, 205-pound build.  Slightly closed setup from the right side of the plate.  Loads knee to knee with a small leg kick getting his weight to the back leg, with his hands getting ready to attack the ball.  Looks to drive through the ball with his lower half and stay through the middle of the field.  Barrel get out of the zone to quickly at times.  Average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 83 mph.  Works to the ball on the infield with fluid feet.  Some stiffness though catch, getting heavy on the feet.  Average hands funneling to the midsection after catch with clean exchanges, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Arm topped at 69 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.55 in the 30-yard dash.
Right hander has projection left as he continues to grow into a young frame.  Working to find rhythm on the mound, around the zone at this time.  Small side step and controlled rhythm through an average leg kick just above the belt.  Front side glove swings through the foot strike, landing on-line and square.  Long arm swing locks out in the back, working to a strong position, throwing out of his sleeve, from a high-3/4 slot.  Average arm speed.  Fastball at 67-71.  Occasional sink.  Breaking ball has gradual 11/5 tilt at 59-62, still maturing with near fastball hand speed.  Flashed some feel for a change-up at 63.

Jeremiah McLemore 3B / 1B / Cape Fear, NC / 2022

5 foot 11, 205-pound build.  Hits from the right side using a slightly open setup.  Small leg kick during his load getting his weight stacked on his back leg. Small hand pump during the load and gets his feet back to even.  Creates some momentum through the ball with his lower half. Loose, quick hands with a level bat path through the zone. Drove the ball during his front toss rounds.  Above average bat speed, working mostly middle to his pull side.  Some feel for the barrel with his exit velocity recorded at 89 mph.  Soft hands on the infield, funneling to the midsection after catch.  Some stiffness in the hips at catch.  Shows the ability to use different slots with his positional velocity peaking at 74 mph.  Recorded a 4.69 in the 30-yard dash.

Colin Scoggins 3B / 1B / Northern Durham, NC / 2021

5 foot 10, 180-pound average build.  Hits from the right side using an open setup.  Medium length stride getting back to even with his hands cocking creating some bat angle during his load.  Some looseness to the hands with a level bat path through the zone.  Some strength in the swing working mostly middle to his pull side.  Found a lot of barrels during his front toss rounds with better than average bat speed.  Exit velocity recorded at 89 mph.  Active feet on the infield with average hands, funneling to the midsection after catch.  Short arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot with his arm topping at 77 mph.  Recorded a 4.22 in the 30-yard dash.

Ethan Young 3B / RHP / Hickory Ridge, NC / 2022

6 foot 1, 200-pound strong, athletic build.  Balanced setup from the right side of the plate. Smooth load with a short stride.  Fluid, simple swing with some feel for the barrel.  Gap to gap approach with average bat speed.  Exit velocity recorded at 82 mph.  Plays through balls on the infield with average hands.  Longer exchange with a short arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Accurate arm that topped at 71 mph to first base.  Pitched the day before the workout so didn’t cut it loose.  Recorded a 4.32 in the 30-yard dash.
