PBR Scout Day: SBA Lake Norman - Quick Hitters

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
NC Executive Director & Scouting Director

PBR ran a PBR Scout Day for SBA Lake Norman on Monday November 18th.  A cooler night on a damp field did not deter the 2021 - 2023 players out of SBA Lake Norman.   Each player went through a full pro-style workout, minus the timed sixty due to the wet and soft field.  Players were able to work through multiple offensive stations including hitting live on the field for scouts in attendance.  Defensively, players worked out from their primary positions.  Pitchers threw controlled bullpens for PBR Scouts at the end of the night.

In the coming weeks, PBR will break down the entire workout with in-depth information on each player in attendance.  Today we jump in with some initial impressions and quick thoughts from the workout in our "Quick Hitters".  Quick Hitters is not mean to be an all-inclusive look at the workout, but just some things that stood out for our PBR scouting staff.

PBR Scout Day: SBA Lake Norman - Quick Hitters

Eli Agosto, C, Lake Norman Charter, 2021
Balanced approach at the plate with some quickness to his hands.  Showed barrel feel.  Advanced accuracy throwing to second base with carry.  Worked to block dirtballs during bullpens.

Cale Oehler, OF/LHP, Cox Mill HS, 2021
Fluid swing from the left side with above average bat speed.  Loose hands and drove balls to both gaps during batting practice.  Loose and athletic on the mound.  Fastball will have to grow but the feel and movement on the secondary stuff advances all three pitches.  Change-up has hand speed with a spin rate of 1088 – 1311 rpm.

Jacob Reeves, SS/2B, Lake Norman HS, 2021
Sprayed the ball around the field during batting practice with a balanced approach.  Has strength to his pull side.  Solid actions defensively with feel for playing on the dirt.

Carter Shea, 3B, Lake Norman Charter, 2021
Aggressive approach with lift in his swing.  Has strength and drove some balls during batting practice with better than average bat speed. Arm has carry across the diamond.

Grady White, OF/1B, Lake Norman Charter, 2023
Has better than average bat speed and worked middle to his pull side.  Drives the ball and strength shows when he gets his barrel out front.

Joseph Flynn, SS, Christ the King, 2021
Short stroke with quick hands.  Stays inside the ball and uses the whole field.  Drove some balls to the left center gap.  Fluid actions defensively on the infield.  Strike thrower on the bump with feel for three pitches.  Fastball spun up to 2280 and the breaking ball peaked at 2395.

Dakota Aspinwall, RHP, Lake Norman HS, 2021
Flashed advanced secondary stuff on the mound with a firm breaking ball spinning at 2180 rpm out of the hand.  Change-up has fade with deception and a 1330 spin rate.

Nick Bumgarner, RHP, Lake Norman HS, 2021
Sharp, late breaking ball with 12/6 tilt and a spin rate ranging 2400 – 2530 rpm.   Good feel for the spin pitch that should allow the fastball to play up as well.

Kyle Wade, RHP, Hough HS, 2023
Undersized but with a quick hand and easy release.  Good feel for three pitches.  Will need to add strength but he has established a good base to work from.
