Player Evals: Team 3 - Top Underclass Games

Each year the North Carolina Top Underclass Games is a must see for college coaches and pro scouts. The 2020 event featured close to 50 of the top uncommitted underclass players in the state. Hosted at the Burlington Royals Stadium in Burlington, NC, players were treated to a 1st class playing surface to compliment the talent on hand.
The day featured a full pro-style workout for position players with a laser timed 60, full offensive and defensive workout, plus an 8 inning controlled scrimmage. Pitchers threw live to hitters, allowing scouts to gauge stuff and pitch-ability.
Today we take our 1st look at the event with an analysis of some of the stats produced, as well as leaders from several traditional statistics. As PBR Scouts continue to pour over the efforts from the day, there will be more information released and more player analysis coming.

By the Numbers:
- 44 players participated in the full pro-style workout
- 2 players ran sub-7.00 sixties
- 9 players ran sub-7.20 sixties
- 12 hitters posted exit velocities of 90mph or higher off the tee
- 23 hitters were at 85mph or better off the tee
- 5 hitters flashed an exit velocity of 85mph or higher in live BP
- 9 INF or OF showed arm strength of at least 83mph from their position
- 3 catchers threw pop times of under 2.00 in the workout
- 6 catchers flashed at least one pop time under 2.20 in the workout
- 20 pitchers threw live in the game setting
- 8 pitchers worked at 83 or higher
- 87mph was the top bolt of the day

Chase Arrington RHP / OF / North Raleigh Christian Academy, NC / 2023
Positional Profile: OF/RHP.
Body: 5/8, 152 pounds. Athletic build.
Defense: Fluid through the ball, catches the ball in front of his left foot, relaxed hands, clean transfers.
Arm: R. OF - 87 mph. Long arm action, quickness through high 3/4 slot, accurate.
Hit: R. Even base, weight over back leg, barrel flat above back shoulder. Short stride, quiet hands.Loose hands with some quickness, slight uphill path to the barrel, gap to gap approach, better than average barrel feel.
Power: 83 mph exit velocity from the tee. Average bat speed.
Run: 7.63 runner in the 60.
Delivery: Small rocker and pause. Swings leg to the mid-chest, rotating the front hip closed. Aggressive stride with a stable head. Rhythmic pump of the hands at knee break, up to the mid-chest to separate. Lands on-line and square with solid extension.
Arm Action: R. Long, fluid arm swing to an over-the-top slot. Better than average arm speed.
FB: T85, 77-85 mph. 1828 rpm. Arm side run, heavier when on the arm side. 1:15 spin tilt out of the hand. Flooded the zone
CB: 68-70 mph. 1928 rpm. Tight, late tilt with 11/5 direction.
CH: 75-77 mph. rpm. Some deception in the arm speed.

Positional Profile: SS/2B.
Body: 5/9, 140 pounds. Young frame, room for maturation ahead, quickness present.
Defense: Quick feet, balanced at the catch position, hands have softness, funnels to the midsection, clean transfers.
Arm: R.INF - 85 mph. Short arm action, high 3/4 slot, some accuracy.
Hit: L. Relaxed, even base, hands at back shoulder. Fluid knee to knee load, average stride, hands get back.Barrel is short to the ball, flat through the zone, hands have quickness, uses the middle fo the field with barrel feel.
Power: 81 mph exit velocity from the tee. Barreled a ball to center in game play, average bat speed that should improve with added strength.
Run: 7.09 runner in the 60.

Cole Irby C / 2B / Kings Mountain , NC / 2023
Positional Profile: C/2B.
Body: 5/11, 175 pounds. Strong build.
Defense: 2.18-2.37 pop times. Quick feet, clean transfers across his chest.
Arm: R. C - 73 mph. Short arm action, over the top slot, some feel for the second base bag.
Hit: R. Open base, weight sits on his back leg, hands at back shoulder. Loads back, average stride into the plate, hands get back.Has lift to his swing path, barrel gets extension through the middle, some quickness to his hands.
Power: 83 mph exit velocity from the tee. Made hard contact for doubles to left center and down the left field line in game action, above average bat speed.
Run: 7.32 runner in the 60.

Dylan Kelly C / 1B / Lee County, NC / 2023
Positional Profile: C/1B.
Body: 6/1, 175 pounds. Athletic frame, room for growth ahead.
Defense: 1.99-2.11 pop times. Fluid feet, quick transfers across his chest.
Arm: R. C - 73 mph. Accurate, short arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Athletic, even base, hands at back shoulder with barrel waggle. Simple load, short stride, hands get set to attack.Balanced, short to ball, barrel stays through zone, loose, quick hands, above average feel for barrel.
Power: 82 mph exit velocity from the tee. Squared a ball up to center in game action, above average bat speed.
Run: 7.67 runner in the 60.

Jack Lopez SS / OF / Cox Mill , NC / 2022
Positional Profile: SS/OF.
Body: 5/10, 140 pounds. Thin frame, room for growth ahead.
Defense: Athletic through the ball, relaxed hands, catches ball off his left foot, clean transfers.
Arm: R. OF - 80 mph. Medium arm stroke, over the to slot, some accuracy.
Hit: R. Relaxed, even base, barrel flat over back shoulder. Weight loads back, short stride, barrel lifts off back shoulder.Balanced, barrel works up through the ball, some quickness to his hands, middle of the field approach, some feel for his barrel.
Power: 72 mph exit velocity from the tee. Average bat speed, numbers should improve with added strength.
Run: 7.5 runner in the 60.

Jordan Overton OF / C / Rolesville, NC / 2022
Positional Profile: OF/C. Loud BP and game at-bats earned Overton a spot with Team Carolina at the 2020 PBR Future Games
Body: 6/1, 187 pounds. Strong frame.
Defense: Plays through the ball, catches the ball off his left side, average hands, clean exchanges.
Arm: R. OF - 82 mph. Long arm action, over the top slot, some accuracy.
Hit: R. Even, wide base, barrel flat on back shoulder. Weight loads back, short stride, hands cock back lifting barrel off back shoulder.Loose, quick hands, barrel whips through the zone, launches balls in BP, above average barrel feel.
Power: 94 mph exit velocity from the tee. Double to left center in game play, makes lots of hard contact, above average barrel feel.

Positional Profile: SS/RHP.
Body: 6/1, 160 pounds. Athletic frame, room for growth ahead.
Defense: Athletic, catches the ball left of center, better than average hands, quick exchanges.
Arm: R.INF - 75 mph. Accurate, long arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Even, narrow base, knee bend, barrel flat over back shoulder. Average stride, hands load back.Loose swing, quick hands, barrel stays through the zone, middle to pull approach with feel for his barrel.
Power: 83 mph exit velocity from the tee. Above average bat speed, made hard contact in two game at bats to center and his pull side.
Run: 7.53 runner in the 60.
Delivery: Rocker to the side, lifting controlled to the low-chest. Stable head. Body leads the arm down the hill. Slightly uphill in the shoulder, working on-line. Lands in-line and square.
Arm Action: R. Loose, easy, clean arm swing to a high-3/4 slot. Average to above arm speed.
FB: T80, 74-80 mph. 1990 rpm. Arm side run when on the arm side. Early run. 1:15 spin tilt out of the hand. Around the zone consistently
CB: 61-63 mph. 1932 rpm. Soft, rolling action with 11/5 arc.

Hunter Whitten 3B / RHP / SW Guilford, NC / 2022
Positional Profile: 3B/RHP.
Body: 5/11, 170 pounds. Strong build.
Defense: Quick feet, catches the ball in the center of his body, better than average hands, funnels to the midsection, clean exchanges.
Arm: R. INF - 77 mph. Short arm action, quickness through high 3/4 slot, accurate.
Hit: R. Narrow, even base, knee bend, hands above back shoulder. Small leg lift, average stride, quiet barrel.Balanced, quick hands, short to ball, barrel stays through zone, gap to gap approach, above average barrel feel.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. Double to left center in game action, average to above average bat speed.
Run: 7.59 runner in the 60.
Delivery: Aggressive rocker forward with a full turn and lift to the mid-chest. Builds rhythm from the leg lift through release. On-line, the hands break over the leg kick. Lands slightly open to his line with a square foot strike.
Arm Action: R. Quick arm from a high-3/4 slot. Long arm swing with some effort to catch the body moving down the mound
