Preseason All-State Evaluations: 2020 Dual Players

One hundred of the top players from across North Carolina converged on Pineville, NC and the On Deck Academy to take part in the PBR Preseason All-State event.  In its third year, the Preseason All-State event has become one of the premier events in North Carolina for high caliber high school players. 

Billed as one of the top events in the state, with an incredible roster put together the day did not disappoint.  Personal records, as well as event records were shattered throughout the day.  Ten dual position players from the 2020 class worked out on the mound and as position players.  Several of the arms show big futures, while others have more prowess at their position.  All are worth checking into.

Preseason All-State - By the Numbers:

+ The event soldout in record time, over 20 days prior to the event
+ 95 of the 100 registrants showed up for the workout
+ 26 players in the Senior Class
+ 48 players in the Junior Class
+ 80 players ran a timed 30 yard dash.  Median time of 4.08 with 31 players running a 3.90 or better
+ 44 players worked out on the infield
+ 78 mph was median velocity of infielder’s positional throws.  12 players clocked 81 or higher
+ 28 players worked out in the outfield
+ 86 mph was the median positional throw from the outfield with 2 players above 90 mph.
+ 18 catchers workout behind the dish with 6 players recording a positional velocity of 76 mph or higher
+ 2.08 – 2.18 was the median Pop Time range for catchers
+ 9 catchers registered a best pop time of under 2.10 in the workout format
+ 35 pitchers worked out in the bullpen format
+ 83 mph was the median of the max fastballs from each pitcher
+ 13 arms touched 85 or better with one arm reaching 90 mph

 

Preseason All-State Evaluations: 2020 Dual Prospects

Will Austin 2B / RHP / Eastern Alamance, NC / 2020

 

5 foot 6, 158-pound build.  Small frame with strength.  Hits from the right side with a tall setup and more weight on his back leg.  Small leg kick during his load with his hands working down and back with a small hand pump.  Weight stays back during the swing with an uphill bat path.  Stays fluid getting extension out front working mostly to his pull side.  Average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 83 mph.  Quick footwork on the infield with some stiffness at catch, lacking some rhythm.  Funnels to the belt after catch using a short arm action, throwing from a ¾ slot.  Some accuracy to his throws that topped at 77 mph across the diamond.  Quick feet through his throws to second base with his velocity reaching 71 mph from a crouch position.  Transfers just above the belt with a medium length arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Pop times recorded at 2.18-2.22 with some accuracy.  Recorded a 4.25 in the 30-yard dash, 5.15 in the 5-10-5, and 7-9 in the standing broad jump.
On the bump, uses a simple side step to pivot and lift to an average balance position.  Clean separation to a short arm swing, loading the scapular.  Works with a quick hand, landing slightly closed across his line, with a square toe.  High 3-4 slot.  Fastball worked 77-79 with occasional, slight sink.  Breaking ball is early, rolling through a 11/6 tilt at 70-71.    

Corey Avant OF / RHP / Sun Valley, NC / 2020

 

6 foot 4, 190-pound athletic, projectable build.  Offensively he works from the right side using a tall, open setup.  Small leg kick, getting his weight to his back leg, then a long stride into the ball.  Hands are back with some barrel tip during the load.  Looks to the lift the ball with some effort in the swing.  Works mostly middle to his pull side with average bat speed.  Strength in the swing with his exit velocity recorded at 95 mph.  Works through the ball in the outfield with some stiffness in his hands at catch.  Clean exchanges with a long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Arm has life reaching 89 mph from the outfield.  Recorded a 4.06 in the 30-yard dash, 4.59 in the 5-10-5, and 9-2 in the standing broad jump.
From the mound, works from an over-the-top slot, accentuated by his size.  Stretch only.  On-line and square at landing, occasionally with a hard fall to the 1B side.  Medium arm swing with some elbow lead and a slight wrist hook.  Average arm speed with some effort.  Fastball at 80-84, touching 86.  Pounded the down zone with the fastball.  Showed feel for the straight change at 72-76.  Breaking ball has gradual tilt with 12/6 arc at 71-73. 

Noah Barozzino 2B / RHP / Hough, NC / 2020


Lanky frame at 6 foot, 155-pounds.  Left hand hitter.  Sets up slightly open with more weight on his back leg.  Small leg kick with his hands working back past his back shoulder during his load.  Medium length stride with good weight transfer through the ball.  Barrel works level through the zone with extension, getting long at times.  Hands work through the zone with average bat speed.  Works mostly to his pull side with his exit velocity peaking at 85 mph.  Soft hands on the infield.  Feet stop at catch, funnels to the midsection with quick, clean exchanges.  Short arm action, throwing from an over the top slot.  Arm has carry, topping at 78 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.05 in the 30-yard dash, 4.57 in the 5-10-5, and 8-9 in the standing broad jump.
Slow tempo over the rubber.  Leg kick to the belt and stable over the rubber.  Short arm action, loading the scapular.  Easy lines.  Medium arm swing to a high-3/4 slot.  Fastball at 79-82.  Attacked the zone with all three.  Breaking ball works down the vertical axis with some tilt as well at 69-71.   Break can be gradual.  Change up sat 72-74 with fade.

Andrei Beal RHP / 3B / Parkwood, NC / 2020

 

Stocky build in a small frame at 5 foot 9, 178-pounds.  Floods the zone with three pitches.  Slow to fast tempo in delivery bringing his knee to his chest at balance.  Slight head tilt with a long arm action working to an over-the-top slot.  On-line with some extension.  Fastball 84-86 with downhill plane.  Occasional run.  Breaking ball was sharp at times, ranging 69-72.  Around the zone and flashed late depth with 12/6 shape.  Threw just a few change-ups, showing feel at 74-75.
Hits from the right side, sitting in his legs with a balanced setup.  Quick load with a short stride.  Some quickness to the hands during the swing.  Sometimes the hips don’t fully turn during the swing causing him to push the ball to the right side.  Line drive approach, working gap to gap.  Some strength in the swing with his exit velocity reaching 86 mph.  Plays through the ball in the outfield with short, choppy steps.  Some stiffness during catch.  Clean exchanges with a long arm action, throwing from an over the top slot.  Accurate arm that reached 88 mph.  Recorded a 4.11 in the 30-yard dash and 8-2 in the standing broad jump. 

Daniel Brown LHP / 1B / Needham Broughton, NC / 2020

 

6 foot 3, 170-pound athletic, projectable build.  Big ceiling as he continues to figure out his body and matures.  Lots of length in the arms and legs.  Deception exists.  Tall over the rubber, using a long arm swing to a ¾ slot.  Quick hand, almost slinging the arm through the slot.  Good extension with regular effort.  Fastball 81-85 with growth coming.  Angle and life exist on the fastball, boring hard to the arm side.  Around the zone, letting it work with movement more than working to command it.  Showed feel for a sharp breaking ball.  Late life down at 70-72.  Slotting mirrored fastball.  Change-up is third pitch at 73-75.  Slows the arm down, pulling it at times.  Some fade when located down. 
Left hand hitter.  Tall setup with more weight on his back leg.  Hands are back during the setup with the bat angled behind his head.  Steps into the ball with a medium length stride and some stiffness in the hands and back elbow.  Wants to drive the ball to his pull side with an uphill bat path.  Looks to get extension.  Doesn’t always repeat his swing causing it to get long at times.  Average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 91 mph.  Works to the ball on the infield with his feet stopping at catch with some stiffness in his hands.  Long arm action, throwing from a ¾ slot with some accuracy to his throws.  Are topped at 75 mph on the infield.  Plays through balls in the outfield with average hands.  Clean exchanges, with a long arm action, throwing from a ¾ slot.  Arm reached 80 mph from the outfield.  Recorded a 4.12 in the 30-yard dash, 4.47 in the 5-10-5, and 9-5 in the standing broad jump.

Ty Cummings 2B / RHP / Corinth Holders , NC / 2020

 

Campbell commit.  6 foot 3, 175-pound lanky build with projection left.  Hits from the right side in a balanced, athletic setup with higher hands above his back shoulder.  Small load with his hands and weight working back with a short stride.  Fluid swing with feel for the barrel.  Hands work throughout the swing with average bat speed.  Found a lot of barrels during front toss with a simple approach looking to drive the ball gap to gap.  Exit velocity recorded at 86 mph.  Plays with good rhythm on the infield and confident hands.  Funnels to the midsection after catch with clean exchanges and life to his throws across the diamond topping at 84 mph.  Recorded a 4.07 in the 30-yard dash, 4.94 in the 5-10-5, and 8-9 in the standing broad jump. 
Easy effort in a very controlled early season bullpen.  Fastball 81-84, touched 85 as he got rolling.  Hard out of the hand with late sink.  Attacks the zone.  Breaking ball has good action at 71-73.  Sharp tilt, missing down if at all.  Change-up gives him three pitches in the arsenal at 72-73.   Change flashed late fade when in the zone.  Controlled over the rubber with a simple rocker and leg kick.  Long arm action to a slot that seems to drop as the hand is cocked, to a ¾ release.  On-line, square, and athletic through foot strike and finish.  Good extension.  Quick arm and frame suggest a high ceiling.

Jake Davis OF / LHP / East Rowan, NC / 2020

 

6 foot, 150-pound athletic build.  Right hand hitter.  Open setup with more weight on his back leg.  Small leg kick during his load.  Weight gets stuck on his back leg at times causing a more uphill path.  Average feel for the barrel working middle to his pull side.  Average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 81 mph.  Plays through balls in the outfield with average hands.  Longer exchange with a long arm action, throwing from an over the top slot with accurate throws.  Average hands on the infield with clean exchanges, throwing from an over the top slot.  Some accuracy with his arm topping at 74 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.04 in the 30-yard dash, 4.50 in the 5-10-5, and 8-1 in the standing broad jump. 
Exaggerated over-the-top slot from the left side on the mound.  High leg kick with slight pelvic tilt, clearing the head early.  Fastball up to 77, sitting 74-77.  Some angle when down in the zone.  Early run.  Misses were to the arm side.  Change-up has fade and is around the dish at 67-70.  Some deception in the arm speed.  Breaking ball has gradual tilt, rolling through a 1/7 arc at 71-73.  Arm can quicken as he mature and the slot loosens.  Shows feel that should continue to progress.

Samuel Fleming SS / RHP / North Mecklenburg, NC / 2020

 

Athletic, projectable build at 6 foot 2, 160-pounds.  Hits from the right side using an athletic, slightly open setup.  Smooth leg kick loading against his back leg, keeping his head centered.  Fluid, balanced swing with quick hands.  Barrel works short to the ball, staying flat through the zone.  Above average bat speed, driving the ball gap to gap.  Exit velocity recorded at 85 mph.  Plays through the ball on the infield with active feet.  Fights to get hands and feet in sync at catch causing some stiffness in the hands.  Clean exchanges with a long arm action, throwing form an over the top slot with carry to his throws.  Arm peaked at 82 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 4.05 in the 30-yard dash, 4.54 in the 5-10-5, and 9-10 in the standing broad jump. 
Around the plate with a fastball at 79-81.  Side step to an average leg kick, building from a slow to quick tempo over the rubber.  Long arm swing to a high-3/4 slot with some looseness in the release.  On-line and square through the finish.  Lacks command of offspeed.  Breaking ball at 61-68 with gradual, inconsistent tilt.  Change-up has sink when on-line at 76.

Carson Hinnant RHP / OF / Heritage, NC / 2020

 

5 foot 11, 160-pound lanky, athletic build.  Small rocker to an average leg kick.  Hands pump from the belt to the chin for separation.  Long arm action works to a high-3/4 release with a quick tempo throughout.  Lands across his line, fighting for extension.  Fastball sat 81-83 with some arm side run and angle.  Attacked the zone with fastball.  Around the zone with the breaking ball at 69-72.  Tight, using near fastball hand speed, producing 11/6 tilt.  Change-up is third pitch at 72.
Hits from the right side using a balanced, athletic setup.  Uses a leg kick during his load with his weight and hands working back. Medium length stride, driving his lower half through the ball.  Big swing with some effort, looking to drive the ball middle to his pull side.  Lift in the swing with an uphill path, getting long at times.  Looks to get extension with average bat speed.  Exit velocity recorded at 90 mph.  Works to the ball in the outfield with his feet stopping at catch and catching the ball with two hands.  Works through his throws with a long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Arm has carry, topping at 85 mph.  Accurate arm from behind the plate with his positional velocity topping at 78 mph from a crouch position.  Clean, quick transfers with a short arm action, throwing from an over the top slot.  Pop times ranging from 2.15-2.18.  Recorded a 3.99 in the 30-yard dash, 4.62 in the 5-10-5, and 8-5 in the standing broad jump. 

Zane Taylor OF / RHP / Crossroads Flex, NC / 2020

 

5 foot 11, 165-pound build.  Hits from the right side with a balanced setup.  Works back in his load with a small leg kick and medium length stride.  Quick hands with bat whip through the zone.  Looks to drive the ball gap to gap with feel for the barrel.  Exit velocity recorded at 82 mph.  Arm has life from the outfield reaching 92 mph.  Aggressively plays through the ball with average hands.  Long arm action, throwing from an over the top slot with accuracy.  Recorded a 4.02 in the 30-yard dash, 4.43 in the 5-10-5, and 9-3 in the standing broad jump.
Simple delivery to balance, with a slight shoulder turn at balance.  Creates some uphill torque in shoulders as the arm works through a long path to an over-the-top release.  Clean and athletic, lands on-line and square.  Fastball sat 82-85, hard, and around the zone.  Breaking ball is sharp, with similar hand speed to the fastball, at 70-71.  Change-up is still developing, occasionally cutting out of the hand, ranging 73-74.  Works to attack the zone.
