Quick Hitters: 5 Star Carolina Viper Workout

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

As Summer Programs are preparing for their upcoming season, many may get together in an effort to workout and give their coaches a good luck at what is on their rosters.  On Sunday May 20th, the 5 Star Carolina Viper program invited their players to the Diamond Xtreme facility in Kernersville, NC where they were able to go through a modified pro-style workout.  PBR was in attendance, along with approximately 15 college coaches to watch the action.

The early portion of the day focused on pitchers and catchers with each arm throwing a short bullpen.  PBR was able to collect information on each arm, including velocity.  The afternoon session saw position players workout offensively and then defensively.  From an offensive side, each player was able to go through a full workout in cages, followed by a live BP in a 100’ x 100’ cage, where evaluators could watch the ball fly off the bat.

Below is a look at some of the players that made an impression throughout the day.  To see a complete look at the statistics from the 5 Star Carolina Viper workout, CLICK HERE.

2018 Grads

+ Two uncommitted seniors took part in the workout.  Ben Gilks (Cuthbertson HS, 2018), a catcher, showed arm strength and accuracy, firing a pop time of 1.90 – 1.98 with accuracy.  Out of the crouch, the arm peaked at 78 mph from the position.  Offensively, a left handed hitter, Gilks has a feel for the barrel with the exit velocity peaking at 90 mph.  After the event, Gilks committed to Guilford Tech CC.

+ A good athlete, and student, Anthony Hennings (Weddington HS, 2018) has average arm strength at 84 mph across the diamond, paired with good hands and rhythm in his feet.  He looked to make routine plays routinely.  Offensively, the exit velocity peaked at 85 off the tee.  From a vertical position, there is average bat speed and average barrel awareness.  The frame at 6-foot, 180 pounds will handle increased strength in the coming years.
