Quick Hitters: ALab Scout Day & Western PIedmont Open ID Pitchers

Brandon Hall
Executive Director, PBR of NC

PBR was in Maiden, NC in Lincoln County on Thursday July 9th to host a scout day and run an open ID.  A fairly new facility, ALab operates out of a massive 33,000 sq foot facility that houses a full weight room, multiple short cages, a pitching area with 5 bullpens, as well as a fully open cage that measures approximately 120ft x 100ft.  The area allowed the players of the ALab and the Western Piedmont ID to run through a full pro-style workout for PBR scouts.

Position players in attendance were able to run a laser timed 30 followed by an offensive evaluation with TrackMan and Blast taking advanced analytics on the swing and ball flight.  Players then went through a defensive workout.  Pitchers were able to throw controlled bullpens for PBR as well.

Below we take a look at some of the position players who performed well throughout their workout.

quick hitters - Pitchers

Will Banks (RHP, Hickory HS, 2022) – Large frame at 6-foot-6.  Arm strength catches the eye immediately, touching 88 throughout the scout day.   Creates angle when down zone.  Secondary stuff is raw but he works to throw with intent.

Dalton James (LHP, Maiden HS, 2021) – Lean frame.  Arm is athletic and loose, working with ease touching 82.  Easy to project more coming as he adds strength.  Slider was hard and late with a spin rate up to 2273.

Zac Martin (RHP, Foard HS, 2022) – Lean and athletic 6-foot-4 build.  Strike thrower flooded the zone with advanced feel for all three.  The feel and pitch-ability of his change-up is a separator at this time.  Fastball up to 87, spinning at 1693, 9 inches of horizontal movement and 9.3 inches of induced vertical movement.  Should produce soft contact with some ease.

Jake Mathis (RHP, TBD, 2024) – Strike thrower that impressed with stuff and feel for such a youthful age.  Fastball up to 81, spinning at 2025 rpm.  Hand speed is present on the breaking ball and change-up.  Good fade on the change.

Connor Peschel (RHP, Foard HS, 2022) – Up to 82 with a thin build that will handle more strength.  Medium arm swing works to a high-3/4 slot.  Positioned with strength at foot-strike.  Repeats.  Strike thrower.

Josh Swink (LHP, Foard HS, 2023) – Long, loose arm swing, wrapped behind the body line but working to an over-the-top slot with better than average arm speed.  Solid secondary stuff complimenting a fastball up to 82.

Mason Tompkins (RHP, Travelers Rest HS (SC), 2024) – Loose and created good angle out of the hand from an over-the-top slot.  Good arm speed that will see the fastball grow as he matures and adds weight to the frame.  Advanced feel for his change-up.
