Statistical Analysis: Myers Park Scout Day
October 22, 2018
In mid-October, as many players are hitting their fall peak and looking forward to some downtime as the winter season approaches, Myers Park High School hosted a PBR Scout Day. The Scout Day featured 36 players from the 2019 – 2022 classes. Along with players from Myers Park several players from across the state were in attendance as well.
Position players went through a full workout, including a laser timed 60 yard dash, an offensive evaluation in the cages and live on the field, as well as a defensive workout. Pitchers were able to throw controlled bullpens where their velocities and stuff were evaluated. As we begin to dive into the Scout Day, we will start with a look at the statistical information gathered from the day. Running speeds, exit velocities, arm velocities, pop time and more were all recorded giving coaches and scouts their first glimpse at this talented group of players.
By The Numbers:
+ 37 players took part in the Scout Day
+ 14 pitchers threw controlled bullpens with Keener leading the way, bumping 88
+ 3 players ran sub 7.00 sixties on the laser timer with another 6 below 7.30.
+ 90 mph was the top exit velocity offensively with 2019 Evan Barbaryka and 2021 Jake Hasner each reaching the number.
+ 11 hitters flashed an exit velocity of 85 mph or better

Statistical Analysis
60 Yard Dash
The laser timed 60 yard dash was run on the track surface at Myers Park HS due to the heavy rain falls from recent storms. Pres Cavenaugh (OF, Myers Park HS, 2019) led all runners with a 6.83 sixty. He was followed closely by teammates Jack Masonis (OF, Myers Park HS, 2019) at 6.86 and Cole Williams (OF, Myers Park HS, 2020) at a 6.90. In total, 9 players ran under 7.25 with several younger players running slower total times but showing some quickness off the line suggesting that they will run better times as they mature and add strength to their frames.
Infield Velocity
Several infielders showed carry and accuracy across the diamond in the infield workout. James Goodwin (SS, Home Schooled, 2019) worked at 84 mph with Colton Stotler (3B, West Wilkes HS, 2020) registering 83 mph. 10 of the 14 infielders in attendance were 75 mph or higher from shortstop.
Outfield Velocity
Seven outfielders worked out as part of the day. Jack Masonis (OF, Myers Park HS, 2019) led all outfielder arm velocities at 86 mph out of the hand. 4 of the 7 outfielders worked at 78 mph or higher on the day.
Catcher Pop Times
Three catchers took part in the workout with the senior leading the way in both pop time and positional velocity. Pop time registers the time from glove to glove, simulating a stolen base attempt at second. The radar gun in on the throw, measuring arm strength out of the crouch, of each catcher.
Exit Velocity
The exit velocity testing is kept standard across the PBR platform with players measuring their offensive exit speed off of a tee in the cage area. 23 players took part in the offensive session with 11 producing an exit velocity of 85 mph or better. The top exit velocity came from Jake Hasner (1B, Myers Park HS, 2021) and Evan Barbaryka (1B, Myers Park HS, 2019). Each touched 90 mph. One of the interesting numbers came from Colton Stotler (3B, West Wilkes HS, 2020) who showed strength from both sides at 88 mph as a right handed hitter and 87 mph from the left side.
Fastball Velocity
Pitchers were able to work through a normal bullpen, throwing in their rhythms and sequencing for PBR scouts on hand. The top fastball came from Seth Keener (RHP, East Surry HS, 2020) at 88 mph. Fourteen total arms threw bullpens with several follows in the group as they showed the ability to command the zone with several Myers Park arms having advanced feel for a change-up.
