Statistical Analysis: South Charlotte Braves Scout Day

Brandon Hall
Executive Director of Scouting, PBR NC

PBR of NC continued its coverage of North Carolina on Tuesday September 1st with a full scout day with the South Charlotte Braves.  The Braves organization is based out of Charlotte, NC.  The workout featured 30 players from the organization taking part in a pro-style workout.

The workout included TrackMan gathering data on hitters and pitchers.  The day started with a laser timed 60.  The surface was a little soft from a heavy down pour the day before, creating times that may be slightly slower than if the players had run on a completely firm track.  Following the 60, players worked offensively, taking multiple rounds of live BP.  Defensively, players worked out from their primary positions for PBR Scouts.  Finally, pitchers threw controlled bullpens with TrackMan gathering all the ball flight data out of the hand.

We begin to break down the PBR Scout Day with a look at some of the statistics produced throughout the workout.

THE 60 YARD DASH

Players ran a laser timed 60 yard dash during the positional rotations.  The 60 was run on the grass surface at Warner Park, home of Covenant Day Baseball.  The surface may have been a bit slow due to torrential rain over the previous week.  The start was firm, but there were a couple of areas of the 60 yard course that were just a bit soft.

EXIT VELOCITY (Live BP)

Hitters worked through offensive testing including taking multiple rounds of live BP.  At the live BP station, TrackMan was able to measure the exit velocity off the bat.  Below are the top Exit Velocities recorded during the Scout Day's live BP.

POSITIONAL VELOCITY – INFIELDERS

Infielders were able to workout at shorstop, on a simulated infield, built to scale, in the outfield, throwing across the infield, or from 1B throwing 3B in the pro-style workout.  Coaches are working to evaluate rhythm, footwork, hands, exchanges, arm action, accuracy, and carry.  To measure arm strength PBR Scouts utilize a radar gun.  Below are the top posted positional velocities from each day.

POSITIONAL VELOCITY – OUTFIELDERS

Outfielders worked out from right field, making throws to the plate.  Throws were measured by a radar gun to gauge arm strength.  Scouts are also working to see exchange, arm path, carry, and accuracy.

CATCHER POP TIMES & POSITIONAL VELOCITY

In the pro-style workout, catchers workout from behind home plate, making multiple throws to 2B, simulating a stolen base attempt.  PBR Scouts did measure the distance from home to 2B on the simulated INF to make sure the distance was accurate.  Scouts again are looking for a quick, clean transition to the release as well as carry and accuracy on the throw.  For catchers, evaluators will put a stopwatch on the “pop time” or the time the ball hits their glove to the time the ball hits the MIF’s glove at 2B.  Coaches can also time the transition from when the ball hits the catchers glove to when he is able to release his throw.  PBR scouts add the radar gun to put a number on the arm strength out of the crouched position.

MAX FASTBALL

Pitchers threw a controlled bullpen for scouts.  The Stalker Pro SII was giving readings to pitchers and scouts via an LED board throughout the bullpen.  At the same time, TrackMan was running, gathering all ball flight metrics from the time of release to the time the pitch was received.  For all velocity readings the TrackMan is the trusted source used for statistical analysis.
