Statistical Analysis: South Charlotte Braves Workout

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

PBR had the opportunity to be around the South Charlotte Braves organization for their fall workout and tryout process at Covenant Day School in Mattews, NC.  Headed by program director David Houseton, the Braves field teams at several age groups with the 13U, 14U, 15U, and 16U working out in front of PBR scouts on November 4th.

The field at Covenant Day was in great shape considering the amount of rain it has received this fall, including a heavy down pour for a couple of hours the day prior to the event.  The surface itself played true, allowing for a full pro-style workout.  Only the timed 60 yard dash seemed to be effected with the track playing slow and just a little soft.  Outfielders were able to workout from right field and infielders at shortstop prior to hitters taking live BP on the field.

Below we take a look at the statistical results from the day.  Several players from each workout stood out with impressive performances.

Statistical Analysis – South Charlotte Braves 15U and 16U

PBR profiled several performances from the South Charlotte Braves workout in a recent Fall Scout Blog (HERE).  Blake Smith (LHP/OF, Piedmont HS, 2021) showed very well throughout the day with a fluid swing and barrel ability paired with a 7.28 sixty.  The athletic lefty also bumped 80 off the mound.

Other Players of Note

+ Cooper Andrews (SS, Covenant Day, 2020) did not turn in a great 60 time but played much faster on the infield than his time would suggest.  Caught the ball with ease and rhythm.  Has carry across the diamond.  Loose with good barrel awareness and average to above bat speed.

+ Logan Fisher (INF, Hickory Grove Christian, 2021) is a physical right handed hitter with looseness in the swing.  Worked gap-to-gap, driving the ball occasionally.  Defensively, the feet can soften but the hands work to secure the ball and transition at the mid-section

+ Todd Lautenschlager (3B, Myers Park HS, 2020) works loose with a flat path through the zone.  Wants extension but maintains rhythm in the swing.  Good actions with average carry across the diamond.

Statistical Analysis – South Charlotte Braves 13U and 14U

The younger age group did not run a timed 60, but they did go through the rest of the pro-style workout.  A couple of player notes are below followed by the full statistical breakdown.  For more information on these younger players, contact the South Charlotte Braves staff and Coach Houseton

+ Thomas Jones is a physical presence with athleticism.  Right handed hitter has some waggle through his load but there is looseness, and advanced bat speed.  As the bat head leans to settle prior to launch, the barrel awareness should improve.  He also flashed easy actions on the infield.

+ Brody Roderick has loose actions and carry from shortstop, at 62 mph across the diamond.  The looseness translates to the batter’s box where he graded out as an above average hitter with some strength present.

+ Grayson Little uses a simple setup and swing to produce advanced bat speed for his age.  The ball jumped off the barrel.  Defensively, the feet need to quicken and develop some rhythm with his hands, but there is athleticism present in a physical frame.
