Ultimate Performance Scout Day & Queen City Prospect ID - Outfielder Analysis

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
North Carolina Director of Scouting & PBR Assoc Scout

Prep Baseball Report of North Carolina began its summer event schedule by running a PBR Scout Day with Ultimate Performance at their beautiful facility in Matthews, NC.  The indoor facility allowed the players attending the showcase to run a full 40, on a laser timer, throw from their defensive positions and hit in a 60’ x 80’ cage so evaluators could see the ball fly.  Along with the players from the Ultimate Performance program, PBR ran an open ID event, the Queen City Pre-Summer Prospect ID.

A total of 33 players participated in the scout day.  The outfielders working out at the event includes 3 players that also worked out on the mound.  Four players worked at or above 80 mph from their position and four had exit velocities above 85 mph off a tee.  Each player went through a full workout, running a timed 40 yard dash, taking several rounds of BP and fielding and making throws to gauge arm strength and accuracy.

Notes Ultimate Performance / Queen City Scout Day:
+ 33 Players updated their PBR Profiles
+ 6 Outfielders produced exit velocities above 82 mph off a tee, offensively
+ 3 Outfielders ran a sub-5.00 40 yard dash

Outfielder Analysis

Brendan Folkerts OF / LHP / Fuquay-Varina, NC / 2020

Average build at 5 feet 10, 174 pounds. Offensively he works from the left side with a tall, slightly open setup. Uses a small leg kick for his load with average bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 86 mph, which should improve as he learns to use his lower half more. His barrel works short to the ball getting extension through the zone.  Shows a middle to opposite field type approach and the ability to hit line drives. From the outfield he shows average hands with clean exchanges playing through the ball. Uses a long arm action working to a high ¾ slot. Accurate arm with positional velocity that topped at 76 mph. Also, recorded at 5.11 in the 40-yard dash.
On the mound, lefty works with a slow tempo, staying level through balance, landing on-line.  Normal effort and long arm swing to a low-3/4 slot. Fastball ranged 68-72 with late arm side run.  Better command to arm side and has to work to get to glove side. Falls slightly, landing hard on the 1B side on follow-through.  Around the zone with all three pitches. Sweeping breaking ball at 66-69, gradual 2/8 tilt. Big, early action. Change-up has fade with near fastball hand=speed, sitting 64-65.

Flashes athleticism from the outfield playing through balls with quick, fluid feet and quick, clean exchanges. Uses a long arm action working to a high ¾ slot with carry to his throws. Accurate arm that peaked at 85 mph.
Some effort on the mound.  Long, loose arm action, slightly loading the scapular as it works to a high-¾ slot.  Some rhythm, working level through an average balance point. Hips rotate early setting him to land open, losing some posture in his head at release.  Fastball sat 78-81 with slight run and better feel for the glove side. In the zone with the fastball. Breaking ball ranged 68-71 with gradual 2/8 tilt.  Change-up touched 74 with solid hand speed. Some feel for all three pitches.
