OUTLOOK
It always helps to return one of the most dominant, pure hitters in the state for his senior year, and that's the luxury of what Coach Rob Christ has in Jack Herman. Herman has been consistently one of the top players in the state since he emerged on to the scene as a freshman for Eastern, and will go into his last spring roaming the outfield as such. Expect there to be some MLB scouts on site when Eastern plays Seneca this year – as both the No. 1 and No. 2 players in N.J.'s 2018 class will be playing (Nick Decker for Seneca). But a 23-win team in 2017 does not lie solely in the hands of one player – as experienced utility player Jesse Barbera and Kutztown recruit OF Ron Silvestro return to the lineup and pitching staffs as well. Expect Barbera and Herman to lead the Vikings on the mound, with one of the top sophomores in the state, uncommitted 1B/RHP Sam Portnoy, to eat up some innings as well. The 6-foot-2 205-pound Portnoy has emerged as one of the top power threats in the 2020 class from the right side, with major gap to gap pop and a fastball that will get into the mid 80s as the weather gets warmer. The lineup will be a well-oiled machine and expect Eastern to compete for South Jersey's coveted Diamond Classic crown as well at the South Group IV Sectional title as well.
