Atlantic Canada - 2022 Watch

Patrick Westhaver & Kevin Richardson
Atlantic Scouting Directors

We take a look at some of the 2022 prospects out east and what we saw from our first tour across the Atlantic in the fall of 2020.

Ryan Avery SS / C / Halifax West , NS / 2022

Report: One word, versatility. He impressed with the legs, in the field, behind the dish and on the bump. We like him behind the dish as he’s polished and very technically sound. Pair that with a 7.19 60-yard dash time, and a 2.04-2.06 pop time and he’s a real talent. Oh, the exit veto was also 82mph. Wait until he adds size and strength to his game.

Nolan Cheeseman OF / RHP / Sir John A MacDonald, NS / 2022

Report: Flashed impressive speed with a 6.84 60-yard dash time. Attacks the ball with efficient routes, and covers a lot of ground in the outfield using his momentum to his advantage when making throws. We will be keeping an eye out to see how the bat develops to compliment his elite speed.

Eric Fields LHP / OF / King's-Edgehill, NS / 2022

Report: This lefty thrower with a good frame showed promise on the bump. The lower half is strong, and he possesses a live arm and good feel for secondary pitches. He currently sits at 79mph, but there is more in the tank as he makes a few mechanical adjustments to his delivery. We think this will be an arm to watch as we enter our winter showcases.

Ryan Galbraith RHP / 2B / Saint John , NB / 2022

Report:  At 6-foot-4, 195-pounds we like the frame. He displayed quiet hands with good swing path producing an exit velocity of 88mph. We believe he projects at 1B with his pop and size, but we aren’t sleeping on him from the mound either. Mechanics are fluid with a repeatable delivery. Looking forward to seeing velocity increases from commitment to an off-season arm program

Jack Laws RHP / 3B / Parkview , NS / 2022

Report: Great build for the mound, at 6-foot-4, 200-pounds his frame is very projectable with upside. Fastball currently sits at 82mph, with good feel for the change-up and curveball. A multi-sport athlete who we are looking forward to seeing again as he adds strength to his game.

Matthew Mackenzie RHP / OF / Avon View , NS / 2022

Report: At 6-foot-1, 165-pounds he offers a projectable frame, partnered with plus command and composure on the bump. He has a repeatable delivery with good arm action, and a fastball that currently sits at 81mph. The curveball has a sharp break and the change-up offers arm side run. He showed well in the field with an impressive 81 outfield velocity too. We know there is a lot in the tank here, stay tuned

Kole Miller LHP / OF / Prince Andrew , NS / 2022

Report: At 6-foot, 210-pounds the project-ability on the bump is obvious for this lefty. He’s strong and possess natural arm side run on his 81mph fastball. We are intrigued to see him this winter to see how the velocity has jumped, and feel this is arm to closely monitor moving forward.

Ethan Smith RHP / OF / Charlottetown Rural , PE / 2022

ReportAt 6-foot, 175-pounds he flashed promise in the outfield and on the mound. He’s an athlete with raw tools. He put up numbers of 80mph from his outfield velocity, an 80mph exit velocity, and 78mph on the mound. With mechanical tweaks these numbers should easily jump. We are looking forward to seeing that commitment to his development.

Nicholas Smith OF / RHP / Holy Trinity, NL / 2022

Report: His versatility was on display all over the field. We like him long-term from the outfield or perhaps behind the dish. His outfield velocity was 78mph, but looked comfortable from the crouch with a 2.35 pop time. The exit velocity was 82mph and looked athletic all over the field. Raw tools, with an obvious commitment to refine his craft.

Braedy Walsh OF / 1B / O'Donel , NL / 2022

Report: Athleticism oozes from this speedy lefty. The pieces are raw, but the talent and upside are clear. Running a 7.00 60-yard dash to go along with a high baseball IQ we can’t wait to see how his numbers increase with a refinement in mechanics both at the plate, and in the outfield.
