Blast Breakdown: 2022 OF/RHP Riley Loomis (Horseheads)

Welcome to Blast Breakdown! In this series we will spotlight one player each week who stood out during this 2020 season and take a deeper dive into their numbers and take a look at some that really stand out.

Before we get started, we'll go over and define some of the terminology being used in the piece:

Bat Speed- The total speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact, measured in mph. The sweet spot is measured 6 inches from the tip of the bat.

Rotational Acceleration- A measure of how quickly the hitter gets the bat from launch position into the swing plane. This is measured in G-Force (g).

On Plane Efficiency- Measures the percentage of your swing that stays on-plane with the incoming pitch

Exit Velocity- The measures the speed of the ball off the bat, measured in miles per hour (mph).

Loomis had an impressive workout at the NY Futures event back in September showcasing raw strength and athleticism throughout the swing that was backed up by the metrics per Blast.

First thing that jumped out in the swing was the bat whip through the zone that yielded a max bat speed of 75 MPH while averaging 70 MPH and it showed in his results with a max exit velo of 95 mph off live arm BP. From the Blast data this puts him in the pro range for bat speed so we know he is equipped to not only hit at the next level but hit for power.

To go along with his plus bat speed Riley had a very advanced Rotational Acceleration peaking at 35 G's with a average of 28.57 G's. Rotational Acceleration shows how quickly he can accelerate into his swing from launch position at the beginning of the swing. Riley is well above the pro average of 16.8 G's according to the Blast data. This means he has the ability to track pitches longer than his peers making him less vulnerable to high spin fastballs and off speed pitches.

The last measurable we are going to look at is Riley's On Plane Efficiency. This tells us the percentage of the swing that stays on-plane with the incoming pitch and according to the Blast data if you average 70% or higher you are equipped to have a higher percentage of making contact. Riley had a above average 76% On Plane percentage and when you put this with his plus bat speed and rotational acceleration this shows us he is equipped to make consistent hard contact against high level pitching.
