Prep Baseball Report

Headed North: 2021 MIF Vincent Mauro (Canisius)

John Northrop
Assistant Scouting Director

Welcome back to another season of Prep Baseball Report - New York’s "Headed North",  where we select members to discuss, highlight, and point out what is to be seen this coming spring and summer at the ball park. The previous two seasons, we highlighted three student-athletes in each article. For our 2019 editions, we will highlight a single student-athlete to keep an eye on throughout the spring and summer as they have recently climbed in our latest rankings.

Now that the calendar reads January - it is almost that time. With winter workouts continuing and the start of the 2019 season not far away, be sure to keep checking in with Prep Baseball Reports upcoming events and coverage throughout the whole high school and summer seasons.

Climbing the rankings

Previous Ranking: NR
Current Ranking: 69th Overall / 10th Positional

BASE CAMP

Currently in the PBR NY rankings, Mauro 69th overall in the 2021 class and 10th overall as a Middle Infielder. Offensively Mauro has an athletic wide set up with a short compact swing. Bat path tends to be level through the zone with good plate coverage showing the ability to make consistent contact up the middle and to the pull side. Defensively, he has athletic footwork getting in front of the ball with quiet hands fielding the ball. Shows a good quick transfer into the throwing position with athletic movement getting the ball out of his hand on the throw. Mauro on the mound shows clean, simple mechanics with long and clean arm action. The 2021 grad utilizes a high 3/4 arm slot and is consistent in the zone repeating his delivery well. Overall Mauro shows a good foundation of tools both offensively, defensively and on the mound to continue this development.

THE ASCENT

Sisto has recorded positive numbers in his attended PBR - New York Events. His best exit velocity and positional arm velocity recording were set at the CNY All-Star Games this past September 2018 with an 84 MPH reading for exit and a 79 MPH mark for arm velocity. Both these numbers have improved from his first attended event which was February 2018 with recordings of an 81 MPH exit velocity and 69 MPH positional arm velocity. We’ve seen his footwork improve on the infield and the bat continues to show added pop.

REACHING THE SUMMIT

"In order to continue to work his way up through the PBR-NY rankings we’d like him offensively drive the baseball to all fields, while on defense continue to work on this athletic footwork to have a quicker first step and work through his throws to show some of his hidden arm strength from the left side of the infield. Right now, due to foot speed, he may push to 3B at the next level. So the arm strength is imperative. On the mound, continue to work on his mechanics to include a longer front leg stride. Overall, added strength development would help Mauro in all areas of the game and help boost his recorded numbers.

PLAYER COMPARISON*

*Note: Many times coaches will ask our staff "Who does he remind you of?" Player "comps" are a popular tool in the scouting/recruiting world and we have decided to add that niche to our feature articles. Sometimes it's within the physical build, the numbers, the actions or a combination of all three.
