This week, On the Hunt, dives into the 2019 class in anticipation of the release of PBR's 2019 National Rankings. Five uncommitted arms headline the group including on two-way prospect, and a big first baseman with some juice.
Jacob Tate, LHP, Christian Academy of Knoxville, TN, 2019
Tate toed the rubber at PBR’s Underclass Border Battle in October, and proved why he is one of the top prospects in Tennessee, and the country, in the 2019 class. Tall and wiry at 6-foot-6, 197-pounds, Tate uses good athleticism to repeat a simple motion that delivers out of a ¾ slot. Consistently down in the zone, Tate dominated hitters in the two innings that I watched with a fastball that sat 82-84 and touched 85 with late sinking action, and a 10/4 slurve-type pitch that showed solid bite, and projects well in the future. The command of his fastball is what really sticks out about Tate. He shows little to no effort in working the ball to both sides of the plate, and gets great extension out in front. With his size and extension, the ball jumps on hitters and appears to be coming in harder than the radar gun shows. As he continues to fill out and gain strength in his long frame, expect for Tate’s velocity to jump up even more, and for him to develop into a possible frontline starter at the next level.
