Preseason Top 25 Preview: No. 20 Mamaroneck, No. 19 Corning

Dan Cevette
Director, New York

After weeks of careful consideration, with schools in all classifications on the table including: NYC schools, private and catholic schools, public Class D through AA schools - We finally released our Preseason Power Top 25 Rankings. Over 900 high schools were eligible for our Power Top 25.

As the season begins our boots-on-the-ground scouting team will be out covering several HS games a week, compiling player and team data, that will be invaluable in accurately shaping this ranking. Today we take a look at our No. 20 and No. 19 ranked teams on our poll.

No. 20 Mamaroneck
Coming off a Class AA state championship, its hard to believe Mamaroneck was slotted in the 20 spot to start the season, but as good as they were last year, they did lose several seniors from the championship team (Kumar Nambiar (Yale-LHP) , Andy Karlan (C-LIU -Brooklyn), Anthony Pecora (SS- Wagner College).

Mamaroneck still has some serious fire-power as they return last years NYS player of the year, 2016 RHP Bill Flatow. Flatow should see a bulk of the innings this year as he works effectively with a three-pitch mix, showing above average command and movement. 2016 3B Peter Matt (University Of Penn) will be the leader on the offense manning the three-hole. Matt stands 6-foot-1, 210-pounds with an athletic build,  offensively swings a big-stick that's been consistent over the last three seasons. Another quality arm sure to see innings is 2016 RHP Hayden Cohen. Cohen looks to challenge hitters with a good firm fastball that hovers in the low 80's.

Mamaroneck is lead by Coach Michael Chiapparelli (in his 32nd year with a record of 531-229). The tigers will rely on some savvy pitching, solid defense, and a batting order that supply's plenty of pop near the middle with some speed at the edges. The Tigers finished last year with a record of 24-4. Their home-opener is April 5, vs Eastchester.

No. 19 Corning
The Hawks made a run in the playoffs last year, falling short to Horseheads for the section four Class AA championship. Corning returns several key players from last years team, and also adds two new 2018 graduates who look to make an early impact to the varsity program.

2016 LHP Danny Madden (St. Bonaventure) will anchor the staff from his 6-foot-2, 190-pound athletic frame. Madden can dial a fastball up in the mid-to-upper 80's with some late deception to his arm-side. Last year he threw a complete game, No-hitter against a tough Horseheads squad early on. Madden will also be a key contributor on offense where he swings an athletic bat from the left-side - when he's not serving up K's. One of the better hitters in section four is 2016 1B/3B Nate Gorges. Gorges uses a simple approach with a good bat-plane and shows the ability to hit to all-fields with some gap-to-gap power. 2017 SS/3B Zachary Turner will see his second year of varsity time where he looks to lead the defense at the short-stop position. Turner uses high-end athleticism with solid footwork, a clean glove up the middle, and a strong arm across the diamond. Solid defensively, look for Turner to be more productive at the plate where he has shown premium bat-speed from a short simple swing. 2017 1B Ben Terwilliger (Maine) looks to build off of last year performance before an injury sidelined him. Swings a fluid bat from the left-side with great size at the plate with real power projection.

2018 C Trevor Henneman makes his varsity debut and will see the majority of the catching duties. Big-physical backstop with a strong throwing arm to second base. Henneman best projects with the bat as he already shows high-end bat-speed combined with bat-strength. One of the top catching prospects in New York's 2018 class. Another sophomore making his varsity debut will be RHP Alex Bardo. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound righty is just starting to surface as a premium option on the mound in the southern-tier. Fastball sits 79-82 with more velocity to come from the big-bodied arm. Bardo should see relief innings this year for the Hawks.
