Scout Blog: Rockland County HS Workout

Jared Carrier

As we continue to canvas the state, we popped in on an open workout at Nyack HS in Rockland County last Thursday night. Several players grabbed our attention and became "blog worthy". Let's take a look:

Highlights

2019 SS Dylan Hoy, Suffern HS, NY
The best all-around player on the field. Above average range and first step quickness. Gets the ball out of the glove in a flash and can make the play on the move. High level defender. Even setup at the plate with balance and some sustained bat speed through the zone.

2019 INF Kenny Dodson, Suffern HS, NY
Forms the other half of the dynamic duo with Hoy. Same team, same grad class. Athletic frame with above average first step; some flare to his game and can spin the double play. Servicable left side arm. Short, line drive stroke on repeat.

2018, 2B/3B Diego Cruz, Nyack
Slight frame with athleticism; spread stance with a compact stroke. Above average hands, projects more at 2B at the next level.

2018 SS Frank Margiotta, Albertus Magnus
Quick first step and release; adequate left side defender but may project better at 2B. Short, line drive stroke with GB/line drive approach.

2019 2B/3B Tyler Edelman, Suffern
The sleeper pick of the workout. Compact frame, steady arm. Nothing flashy but makes the plays. Spread stance with line drive approach. 2B/3B projection holds true for next level. Another 2019 infielder to go with Hoy and Dodson.

2019 SS AJ Contreras, Nyack
Slight frame; ranges well with adequate arm. Whippy bat through the zone.

2019 OF/INF Mike Andretta, Albertus Magnus
Displayed an easy arm from a 3/4 slot in the outfield. On the infield can handle the double play with quiet feet around the bag and a quick release.

2019 C/OF Billy Sullivan, Nyack
High motor player with an aggressive approach in the outfield; strong arm with carry. Behind the plate he unleased a number of on-the-bag throws in the 1.97-2.07 range. Athletic behind the dish with quick feet, transfer and an arm that plays. Controlled, balance approach at the plate.

2018 C James Costin, North Rockland
Full body frame with pop times ranging from 2.06-2.12. Average arm but quick feet and release gets the ball there on time.

2018 C Dylan Goldstein, Tappan Zee
Athletic frame with pop times ranging from 2.10-2.14 with above average accuracy. Improved transfer should get him in the sub 2.10 range. Solid defender.

2018 LHP John Freeman, North Rockland
Slight build with and over the top arm slot. Showed some pitchability sitting 77-79 MPH.

2019 RHP Cameran Price, North Rockland
Thick lower half with a 3/4 arm slot.  Fastball rides downhill at 82-84 MPH with some late life. Mixed in a lateral action slider at 68-71 MPH and showed some feel to his change up at 72 MPH. Durable with a 3-pitch mix.

2018 RHP Joe Ottaviano, Albertus Magnus
Slight yet athletic frame working from a 3/4 slot. Sat 79-81 with 10-to-4 action to breaking ball at 66-68 MPH. Change up featured late fade at 68 MPH.

2018 RHP Sean Tannian, Nyack
Strong, physical frame in the 6-foot-2 200 pound range. Works from a high 3/4 slot with fastball sitting 81-82 MPH, touching 83 MPH. Two-seam fastball features arm side run while maintaining velocity. Works primarily from the stretch; slider had good spin but backed up at 74-75 MPH.

2019 Sean Clifford, Albertus Magnus
Ideal power pitcher's frame in the 6-foot-3 190 pound range. Featured some cross-fire action to his delivery from a 3/4 slot. Command wavered possibly due to stride direction. Lively 82-83 MPH fastball with a tilting slider at 71 MPH. Mixed in a change at 76 MPH.

2018 RHP/1B John Veraja, Tappan Zee
Broad shouldered RHP and corner infielder who was 81-82 MPH with late life to his 2-seam fastball at 81 MPH. Am action is long and easy; 12-to-6 CB at 62 MPH and mixed in a change at 74 MPH.
